Heavyweight Crew Closes Action at 2013 Eastern Sprints
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Dartmouth men’s heavyweight crew team closed out action at the 2013 Eastern Sprints on Sunday (May 19). The Big Green’s first varsity eight claimed the third level final to lead the Dartmouth boats.
The Big Green’s top boat, which raced in the first morning heat, placed fifth just behind Syracuse and ahead of Rutgers in the morning heats. In the third level final, the Dartmouth crew clocked a 6:19. 23, crossing the finish line four seconds ahead of Ivy League foe, Columbia.
Dartmouth’s second varsity eight also raced in the third level final, earning runner-up honors. In the morning heat, the Big Green placed fifth, just two seconds off fourth-place crew from Penn. In the final, the Big Green battled the Holy Cross crew until the finish line, but it was the Crusaders that crossed first, just two seats ahead of the Dartmouth boat with a time of 6:31.86. The Big Green crew crossed with a time of 6:33.25.
The Big Green’s third varsity eight was the lone boat to compete in the petite final, placing sixth with a time of 6:35.41. The race was very tight for third through sixth place, as just four seconds separated the crews.
Dartmouth also boated a four, which placed fifth in the grand final with a time of 7:19.95.
The Big Green will wait to see if they earn a bid to the 2013 IRA National Championships in Sacramento, Calif., May 31-June 2.
