HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth heavyweight crew team handed out its season-ending awards at its annual barbeque with senior captain Joseph Polwrek (Pasadena, Calif.) taking home both awards.
Polwrek claimed both the Gardner Award for senior leadership as well as the Robinson award for greatest improvement. Polwrek sat in the six-seat in the first varsity eight this season and led the Big Green to a 12th place finish at EARC Sprints.
The Big Green heavyweight rowers had several tight races this spring and picked up wins over Holy Cross and Rutgers. Dartmouth finished 12th at Eastern Sprints and performed well enough to earn its 14th consecutive bid to the IRA National Championship. The first varsity eight took 15th at IRAs while the freshman eight placed 11th after racing in the petite final for the second consecutive season.
The team also selected Ryan Ganong (Wellesley, Mass.) to serve as captain of the 2012-13 squad.
