WORCESTER, Mass.- The Dartmouth men's heavyweight crew team concluded action at the 2012 EARC Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday (May 13). The Big Green finished with eight points in the Rowe Cup standings.

Brown won the marquee first varsity eight races with a time of 5:49.60, holding off Harvard, who placed second with a time of 5:49.91. The Crimson claimed the Rowe Cup with 37 points, ahead of the Bears, who had 34 points.

The highlight of the meet was the Big Green freshman eight. The Big Green boat took third place in the petite final with a time of 6:17.29, just 4.43 seconds off of the Wisconsin crew that took second place with a time of 6:13.24. The finish was the highest finish for a Dartmouth boat on the day.

The Big Green's first varsity eight placed sixth in the petite final in a very tight race, a mere five seconds separated all of the crews. Dartmouth's crew, who finished with a time of 6;01.14, was just one second off of Cornell and Penn, who finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Dartmouth's second varsity eight also performed well in the finals. The Big Green crew took fifth in the petite final with a time of 6:17.01 behind the crew from Yale who took fourth with a time of 6:11.62.

Dartmouth opened Sprints with several good races in the morning heats, placing three boats in the petite final. The first varsity eight, second varsity eight and freshman eight each advanced to the afternoon's petite finals while the Big Green's third varsity four placed third in the grand final with a time of 6:56.32.

The Big Green's freshman eight took third in its heat with a time of 6:01.91, just three seconds shy of the second place boat from Brown. The biggest battle was between the Big Green and Yale. Dartmouth just edged the Bulldogs for third place, finishing just one tenth of a second ahead of Yale.

The second varsity eight took fourth in its heat with a time of 6:18.94, ahead of Holy Cross and behind Syracuse.

Dartmouth's top boat raced in one of the better races of the morning. The Big Green took fourth with a time of 6:03.65 but it was a battle for second through fourth place with just seven seconds separating the boats.

The Big Green will host Syracuse on the Connecticut River on May 30 in the battle for the Packard Cup and will see if it has done enough to earn an at-large bid to the 2012 IRA National Championships held May 31-June 2 in Camden, N.J.
