SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Dartmouth heavyweight freshmen eight advanced to the petite finals with a sixth-place finish in the semifinals at the 2013 IRA National Championships on Saturday (June 1). The Big Green’s first varsity eight also moved on to the fourth final on Sunday after racing in Saturday’s semifinals.

Dartmouth’s top boat was in a battle in its semifinal race. Racing in the third semifinal heat, the Big Green got a good start of the line and was neck-in-neck with the Oregon State crew through the first 1500 meters. With 500 meters left to go, the Beavers used an impressive sprint to cross just ahead of the Dartmouth boat with a time of 5:59.78. The Big Green crossed the finish line with a time of 6:02.07 and in fourth place. Dartmouth’s time was just a little over two seconds behind Oregon State. Penn won the race with a time of 5:54.68 and will race in the third final on Sunday.

The Big Green rookies, for the third consecutive season, will race in the petite final. Their semifinal race was competitive from the start as all six crews were within two seats of each other at the outset. Washington, Harvard and California pulled ahead of the pack in the middle thousand and would finish the race in that order. Dartmouth’s boat crossed the line with a time of 6:25.13, which was good for sixth place.

Brown won the other freshmen eight semifinal and was joined by Ivy League foes, Cornell, Penn and Princeton in the top five.

Dartmouth closes action at the 2013 IRA National Championship tomorrow (June 2). All four Big Green boats will be in action.
