Dartmouth in Lead After Day One of Dartmouth Invitational

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - The Dartmouth swimming and diving teams opened the Dartmouth Invitational with an evening session at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center on Friday (Jan. 27). The Big Green won six of the evenings 10 events and is sitting in first place on both the men's and women's sides.

The women have 459 points ahead of UMass with 325 and Bryant with 153. On the men's side it's a much tighter race, with the Big Green leading UMass, 390-354, while Bryant is in third place with a score of 149.

Dartmouth got things started by sweeping the 200 free relays. The women's team of Christine Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.), Siobhan Hengemuhle (Boulder, Colo.), Sasha Alcon (Fremont, Calif.) and Mary Van Metre (Edina, Minn.)) won the event with a time of 1:37.61, while the men's team of Ian Woon (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Andrew North (Omaha, Neb.), One June Chang (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Zach Doherty (Pelham, N.Y.) earned the Big Green sweep with a time of 1:24.61.

Christine Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) provided the highlight of the session setting a new Upper Valley Aquatic Center record in the 500 free with a time of 5:00.84. Teammates Erin Henn (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Kirstin Hocheder (Tucson, Ariz.) finished in third and fourth place, with times of 5:11.02 and 5:11.40, respectively.

The Dartmouth women had several strong showings but none stronger than a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200 IM. Freshman Rebecca Butler (West Orange, N.J.) picked up her first collegiate win in the event with a time of 2:09.25 while Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) earned runner up honors with a time of 2:09.38. Kendall Farnham (Severna, Md.) and Charlotte Williams (Boca Raton, Fla.) rounded out the Big Green contingent with times of 2:10.60 and 2:11.30.

Dartmouth's men also picked up some quality wins on the opening night. Albert Roth (Aurora, Ill.) helped make it a Big Green sweep of the 200 IM winning the event with a time of 1:53.70 while the sprinters made magic in the 50 free. The Dartmouth men went 1-2-3 in the 50 free with Doherty taking the event with a time of 21.27. Doherty was followed by senior co-captain Michael Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) with a time of 21.32, while Chang took third with a time of 21.55.

The Big Green closed the night with a win in the women's 400-medley relay with a time of 3:56.80. Meredith Sweeney (Hinsdale, Ill.), Williams, Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.) and Alcon teamed to give Dartmouth the win in the final event of the session. 

Dartmouth will be back in action at the second annual Dartmouth Invitational at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt., tomorrow. The first session of the day begins at 9 a.m. and the final session of the invitational is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
