BIG GREEN TIDBITS
Welcome Home! - The Dartmouth swimming and diving teams return to Karl Michael Pool after spending two weeks training in Hawaii from Dec. 7-Dec. 22 during the annual winter training trip. The home meet is Dartmouth's second home meet of the season after defeating Brown in its last outing on Nov. 19. Read about the Big Green's training trip here.
Back to the Pool - The Big Green are returning to the water after almost a two-month break from competition. Dartmouth's last meet was against Brown on Nov. 19. Saturday's meet marks the second consecutive season and the third time in the last four seasons that the Big Green has faced Yale and Penn after the winter break.
Looking to Keep the Momentum Going - Both the men and women's programs are entering Saturday's meet on a roll having defeated both Cornell and Brown. The Dartmouth men defeated Cornell for the first time in the last 32 years and are looking to keep the momentum going against Ivy foes Penn and Yale this weekend.
Dartmouth Women Take on Twin State Rival Vermont - The Big Green women's squad will also take on rival, Vermont, this week on Sunday (Jan. 15). The Big Green defeated the Catamounts in dominating fashion last year, taking a 220-78 win in Hanover and is looking for its second straight win over the regional rival.
Big Green Sweep Bears in Last Outing - For the second consecutive season, the Big Green swimming and diving programs defeated Ivy League foe, Brown. The win also marked the first time since the 2009 season that the Dartmouth men earned a win within the first two home meets of the season. During the 2009-10 season the men defeated Colgate while the Dartmouth women defeated Cornell in the first home meet last season.
Dartmouth Continues Excellence in Long Distance Events - The Big Green has quite a formidable group of long distance swimmers. On the men's side, Nejc Zupan (Kamnik, Slovenia) has dominated the 1000 and 500 meter events in both meets this season and has won the 1000 meter against all three opponents. On the women's side, the Big Green went 1-2-3 in the 1000 meter against Brown. Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) won the event while teammates Erin Henn (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Kristin Hocheder (Tucson, Ariz.) finished in second and third.
Big Green Divers With Solid Meet against Bears - The Big Green divers also started the 2011-12 season strong. Against Brown, both the men and women won the 3-meter competition with Big Green freshmen Kendall MacRae (Sherborn, Mass.) and Ryan Shelley (Sudbury, Mass.) winning their first collegiate competitions. Sophomore Katy Feng (Westfield, Mass.) won the 1-meter, while Shelley completed the sweep with a win in the 1-meter.
Dartmouth Underclassmen Helping Fuel Turnaround - The Big Green have undoubtedly taken a major step in the right direction this season and a lot of that can be attributed to the success of the talented group of underclassmen. Led by 2010-11 Ivy League champion, Nejc Zupan (Kamnik, Slovenia), the sophomore class accounts for nine Dartmouth varsity records led by three from Zupan in the 1650 free, 1000 free and the 200 IM. The Big Green women own six of those records. Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) owns the 200 and fly and 400 IM records while Meredith Sweeney (Hindsdale, Ill.) owns records in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Kendall Farnham (Severna Park, Md.) and Christine Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) own the 100 fly and 200 free records. The Dartmouth freshman class has also been contributing. Already this season, Big Green freshmen Valerie Orellana (Arleta, Calif.), Sasha Alcon (Fremont, Calif.) and Siobhan Hengemuhle (Boulder, Colo.) have each captured event titles this season on the women's side. On the men's side divers Ryan Shelley (Sudbury, Mass.) and Ethan Canty (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and swimmer Ian Woon (Highlands Ranch, Calif.) have also won events titles.
Big Green Host Second Annual Dartmouth College Invitational - The Dartmouth College Invitational is on the Big Green schedule for the second consecutive season. The Big Green will welcome Bryant and UMass to the second annual invitational held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt., Jan. 27-28.
Barry and Pinson Named Captains of the Women's Squad - Seniors Galen Barry (Wayne, Pa.) and Kelsey Pinson (Portland, Ore.) were named captains for the women's swimming and diving squad for the 2011-12 season.
Stumpf and Ahern Lead Dartmouth Men's Squad - Seniors Matt Stumpf (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Michael Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.) were named captains for the men's swimming and diving squads during the 2011-12 season.
Wilson Returns for 19th Season- Head Coach Jim Wilson is in his 19th season as head coach of the Dartmouth swimming and diving squads. Wilson, originally hired to coach the Dartmouth men, took over the women's team in 2006. Wilson also returns assistant coaches Jesup Szatkowski and Jenn Verser while Chris Hamilton returns as Dartmouth's diving coach.
