HANOVER, N.H. - Junior Will Geoghegan (Brunswick, Maine) stepped up and filled the void at the top of the Dartmouth men's cross country team with the graduation of Ethan Shaw '12 by taking the top collegiate spot at the Dartmouth Invitational Saturday morning.

The annual season-opening meet held at the Hanover Country Club saw the junior finish as the top collegiate runner in 24:50.10, edging out Syracuse's Joe Whelan just two-hundredths of a second behind.

Running unattached, Tito Medrano was the overall winner, finishing in 24:43.53.

The Orange earned the top team spot in the standings with 22 points, while the Big Green's 39 were good for second. Middleburry finished third on this day with 85 points.

Senior Jonathan Gault (Bedford, Mass.) was the second Dartmouth harrier to finish, taking fifth in 24:53.21, while junior John Bleday (Westwood, Mass.) was 11th in 25:05.20.

A grouping of runners in the Green and White followed soon thereafter as Henry Sterling (South Freeport, Maine) led the surge with a 17th-place showing (25:23.83).

Freshman Curtis King (Wuana, Wash.), junior Steve Mangan (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), senior Mike Danaher (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Silas Talbot (Anchorage, Alaska) all followed in the next four spots over 12 seconds.

The men's team will have almost three full weeks to rest up and prepare for Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational on Friday, Sept. 28 in Bethlehem, Pa. The race is annually attended by some of the top teams in the nation, making it one of the most well-known meets in collegiate cross country.
