WESTERLY, R.I. — Junior James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) and the Dartmouth men's golf team lead The Classic at the Shelter Harbor Golf Club after the opening round. Pleat shot a 1-under-par 70 to lead all individuals, and the Big Green shot a 291 to lead the 15-team event.
Dartmouth holds a seven-stroke advantage over Central Connecticut State who is in second at 298, and Connecticut is in third with a score of 299.
Pleat in the only player under par at the par-71 6,695-yard golf course. Bernie D'Amato of Princeton and Matthew Dziubina of UConn are one shot back after carding a 71. Pleat earned his 70 by shooting a 33 on the front and a 37 on the back.
Including Pleat, Dartmouth has four players currently in the top 20. Senior Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) shot a 1-over-par 72 and is tied for fourth place. Sophomore Joey Maziar (Atlanta, Ga.) is tied for 12th after a 3-over par 74. Freshman Charlie Edler (Fair Haven, N.J.) finished the day with a 4-over-par 75 and is tied for 16th. The fifth player for the Big Green is junior Owen Lynch (Rumford, R.I) who finished the day at 12-over-par (83).
