HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team defeated Cornell, 9-8 in dramatic walk off fashion before rain postponed game two of the doubleheader at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, the Big Green improve to 3-21-1 overall, 2-3 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red drop to 6-14 overall, 1-4 in conference play.

Breanna Ethridge got the start in the circle for Dartmouth for the 2017 home opener. The Big Green bats quickly supplied an early lead with three runs in their first trip to the dish. Freshman Calista Almer, who finished the day going 4-for-4, led off with a single and stole second. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases setting up Karen Chaw for a two-RBI double to left field. The next batter, Chloe Madill hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Maddie Damore for the 3-0 lead.

Dartmouth added to its lead in the bottom of the second when Alyssa Jorgensen smacked a one-out triple to left-center, which plated a pair of runs to put the Big Green ahead, 5-0.

A scoreless third gave way to the fourth when Damore extended Dartmouth’s advantage by two with just a swing of the bat. After Almer led off with a triple, Damore hit her third homer of the season to center field to give the home team a commanding 7-0 lead.

Neither team could get anything across in the fifth, but Cornell responded in the top of sixth as the Big Red came all the way back to take an 8-7 lead. Morgan Ebow came into pitch for Ethridge and got into trouble early, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. Bridgette Rooney got Cornell on the board with an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw. A pair of walks, including one with the bases loaded brought Ethridge back into the circle to try and escape the jam. Rebecca Kubean singled to center, which scored another run, before Olivia Lam hit a three run home run to center to tie the game.

The Big Red took the lead when Megan Murry hit a two-out double to left-center, scoring her teammate Jessica Bigbie from second.

Damore led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and advanced to third on Chaw’s groundout, but the Big Green could not bring her home, giving the Big Red a chance to score insurance runs in the seventh. However, Ethridge kept her composure in the circle and was able to retire Cornell in order to set up the dramatic bottom half of the seventh.

Freshman Micha Schroder stepped in to pinch hit and led off with a triple down the right field line. After a groundout by Tiffany Dyson, Lourlin Lara reached on a fielder’s choice, tying the game at eight runs apiece. The next batter was Almer who laid down a bunt-single to put Lara in scoring position. A wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position with Jorgensen at the dish. The Woodlands, Texas native was the hero for Dartmouth when she launched a base hit into center field, scoring Lara for the walk off win at home.

The Big Green return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Princeton with the first pitch of Game 1 at 12:30 p.m. The second game of today’s scheduled doubleheader will take place on Sunday at 12:30. All three games can be seen live in HD on the Ivy League Digital Network with Brett Franklin on the call.
