HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to regional rival, Boston College, on Wednesday (April 25) at the Dartmouth Softball Park. The Big Green and Eagles both donned pink uniforms in honor of the NFCA's "StrikeOut Cancer" Initiative.

"The team battled well today," said head coach Rachel Hanson. " Some great work from our pitchers, especially Rachel Hein in relief. We need to string our hits together better, but we have lots of excitement heading into the Harvard weekend."

Boston College (22-22) opened the scoring in the first inning of the opening contest. Pitcher Nicole D'Argento nailed a home run over the left field wall in the first at bat of the game to set the tone for the Eagles early. With two outs and one baserunner, the Eagles tacked on another run with an RBI single to second base from Chelsea LoBue as Boston College took a 2-0 lead into the home half of the inning.

Dartmouth (12-23) picked up its first hits of the day in the third inning. Catcher Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double to left field from freshman lefty Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas).  Morgan Wharton (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up her second RBI of the season with a single, which sent St. Romain around the bases.

Neither team could get anything across in the next three innings but the Big Green had a chance to cut into the lead in the sixth inning. Trailing 3-1, Britta McOmber (Bothell,Wash.) opened the inning with a leadoff single up the middle, followed by a double down the right field line from first baseman Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.), giving Dartmouth runners at second and third.

Unfortunately, the inning ended with a popup and a ground out, squandering the scoring opportunity for the Big Green. Dartmouth was able to rebound in the seventh inning. Rumley, who went 2-of-3 from the plate, singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a ground out. Shortstop Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) used her fifth double of the season to score Rumley, but the game ended on a groundout.

Rumley led the Big Green on both ends, as she pitched her sixth complete game of the season allowing just three runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.  She now has 131 career strikeouts, 38 shy of the single-season record of 169.

In the late game, the Eagles struck twice in the top of the first and second innings, to open an early 4-0 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

In the second inning, Boston College capitalized on a two-run home run from LoBue, the second homer of the afternoon for the Eagles. The third inning also produced two runs for the Eagles, thanks to a leadoff double from Andrea Filler.

The Big Green looked as if they might get some of it back in the third. Senior pitcher Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) opened with a leadoff single up the middle and after a walk, Jonele Conceiaco (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was also on base. Barker, who stole third, gave the Big Green runners at the corners but a pair of strikeouts left the runners stranded.

After a three-run fifth inning from the Eagles, Dartmouth again had a chance to cut into the lead. With a double from catcher Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.), followed by a single from Conceiaco, two strikeouts ended the rally.

Dartmouth put runners on in the sixth and seventh inning, but couldn't find a way to push a run across in the shutout loss.

Barker was 1-of-1 from the plate while Adams, Conceiaco, Rumley also added hits for the Big Green. In the circle, Barker pitched 4.1 innings of work allowing seven runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) came in and threw 2.2 innings of relief work with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Big Green travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on Ivy League rival, Harvard, on Saturday (April 28). Doubleheader action is set to begin at 2 p.m. The Crimson will travel to Hanover on Sunday (April 29) to close out the series.
