LOWELL, MASS. – UMass Lowell shutout the Dartmouth softball team for the first-time this season, as the River Hawks won, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at River View Field.
Freshman Ashley Sissel took the loss allowing the lone unearned run in the fourth. Sissel is now 1-4 on the season after fanning five batters and allowing just four hits. Sophomore Alex Jarvis pitched a scoreless sixth for the Big Green.
Marielle Handley tossed a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts for the River Hawks. In the fourth, UMass Lowell (9-29) scored its only run off a sacrifice fly RBI by Alyssa Zinkiewicz.
Dartmouth (26-15, 15-1 Ivy) picked up hits in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings. In the third frame, freshman Chloe Madill doubled to center field but did not advance. In the fifth, junior Megan Averitt reached on a fielder’s choice and then moved to second and third on a passed ball. Averitt was the lone Big Green to move past second base, as Handley did a solid job inside the circle.
Dartmouth will conclude the regular season with a home-and-home doubleheader with Harvard on Saturday in Cambridge and then Sunday in Hanover. Both doubleheaders will begin at 2 p.m. and can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network in HD.
