ITHACA, N.Y.  –  Led by four home runs and solid pitching, the Dartmouth softball team swept Cornell, 5-1 and, 8-2, on Saturday afternoon at Niemand*Robinson Field. Dartmouth improves to 12-13 overall and 2-0 in the North Division of the Ancient Eight.

The Big Green finished their first Ivy League doubleheader with 14 hits and 16 strikeouts. Junior Kristen Rumley aided the team with her eighth win and ninth complete game of the season. Sophomore Morgan McCalmon won the nightcap and Rumley returned to secure the save.

Dartmouth executed the long ball to perfection, with four shots over the fence in 14 innings. McCalmon finished with two home runs on the day and classmate Katie McEachern and freshman Maddie Damore also contributed with blasts. McCalmon led the team with seven RBI on the day and had four hits.

It didn’t take the Big Green  long to get on the scoreboard, as the team loaded the bases in the top of the first frame. Freshman Chloe Madill singled up the middle to begin play. With one out, Cornell issued three consecutive walks that allowed Madill to score, giving the visitors the early edge.

Dartmouth added its second run on an RBI single by McCalmon. With the bases still juiced, Cornell starter Alyson Onyon retired the side, forcing freshman Karen Chaw to ground into a double play.

In the third stanza, McEachern sent her team-leading fifth home run over the left field wall and then McCalmon followed suit, drilling her second of the season, in the same direction for the two-run shot to give the Big Green a 5-0 lead.

Heading into the fifth, Rumley had set down all but two Big Red batters, but a solo shot by Christina Villalon snapped the shutout. She would allow only two more hits the rest of the way and struck out nine batters.

McCalmon took the circle to complete the sweep in game two and allowed two runs on three hits over four innings of work. She also picked up five strikeouts with just one walk.

Dartmouth once again took the early advantage with a run in the second frame. Chaw picked up her 18th RBI of the season with a single to right center that scored Damore who led off with a walk.

Cornell (7-12, 0-2 South - Ivy) took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the frame with an extra base hit and a single. However, the Green and White did not let the lead stand  long, as Damore crushed a two-run shot over right field fence to regain the lead for Dartmouth, 3-2, in the third.

Freshman Ashley Sissel made her Ivy debut in the fifth and faced five batters before Rumley returned with the game-tying runner at first, but struck out Chloe Pendergast to end the sixth.

In the Dartmouth seventh, McEachern doubled, followed a hit by pitch to Damore and then a walk to sophomore Kelsey Miller to put ducks on the pond for the Big Green. Once again, it was McCalmon showing off her strength with a base clearing double down the left field line.  Dartmouth scored its final run as McCalmon moved over to third on a wild pitch and then crossed the plate on a groundout by Chaw.

The Big Green will meet Princeton on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. The doubleheader can be seen live in HD on the Ivy League Digital Network.
