LOS ANGELES – The Dartmouth softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, defeating UC Riverside, 3-1, and falling to Canisius, 4-2, at the LMU Invitational II.
Junior Kristen Rumley picked up her seventh win and eighth complete game of the season, allowing just one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. In a true pitching matchup, offense was at a minimum, but the Big Green were patient and scored twice in the first inning. After a pair of walks to begin the frame by junior Brianna Lohmann and Rumley, sophomore Morgan McCalmon singled to right field and plated both.
Dartmouth (10-11) added its third run in the fourth frame on an RBI single by freshman Maddie Damore to right center. The Highlanders attempted a comeback in the sixth, but only scored once on a double to center.
Against Canisius, freshman Ashley Sissel allowed three runs in the first inning on three hits, including a leadoff triple. However, the Big Green did strike first in the top half of the frame, as freshman Karen Chaw knocked a double to left center and scored classmate Chloe Madill who reached on an infield single.
The Golden Griffs added a fourth run in the third stanza on a single through the right side. Dartmouth cut the deficit in half with a solo home run in the sixth by Madill, but still trailed, 4-2.
In the seventh, the Big Green threatened with a single by Lohmann and then a double by Damore to put runners in scoring position with no outs. After two ground outs, the Green and White loaded the bases on a full count walk by senior Alex St Romain. Canisius starter Jen Consaul (4-9) forced a third base lineout by freshman Alyssa Jorgensen to end the attempted rally.
Sophomore Alex Jarvis pitched 4.1 innings in relief of Sissel and allowed just the one run in the third.
Dartmouth will conclude the LMU Invitational II on Sunday as they meet Cal Poly at 12 p.m. and host LMU at 2 p.m. The team is scheduled to meet UMass Lowell on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Dartmouth Softball Park (weather permitting).
