SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Dartmouth softball team scored a season-best 11 runs and led the entire game in defeating Portland State, 11-5, on Friday evening at Campus Diamond.

Four players finished with multiple runs batted in, as the team scored a pair of runs in three separate innings and then tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh stanza. Sophomore Kelsey Miller and freshman Karen Chaw continue to lead the squad inside the batter’s box with six hits combined and four RBI.

Both had three hits, respectively and were the driving force behind the Big Green offense. Junior Kristen Rumley, sophomore Alex Jarvis and freshman Chloe Madill added two hits each, as the Big Green finished with a season-high 18 hits and reached base in every inning.

Rumley (3-3) executed well inside the circle for the Big Green for her third win of the season. The Dartmouth ace threw four innings and allowed one run on four hits. Rumley fanned eight of the 16 batters she faced.

Jarvis replaced Rumley in the fifth inning with the Big Green holding a 5-1 lead. The reliever breezed through the fifth and sixth innings, but loaded the bases with one out and surrendered four runs, but Dartmouth’s lead was too large for the Vikings to overcome.

Dartmouth (3-7) scored in the opening frame on an RBI double to left field by Chaw that scored Rumley. The team added two more runs in the second inning after sophomore Morgan McCalmon singled to center field and then scored on an RBI double by Miller to right. The Big Green’s third run came in the next at-bat when Rumley singled up the middle to score Miller.

Portland State added a run in the third, but the Big Green increased their lead with two more runs in the fourth. The offense was aggressive the entire contest and began the frame with an infield single by McCalmon.

Miller added to her three-hit game with a triple to right-center that scored McCalmon. Dartmouth's next run came on an infield ground out by Rumley that advanced Miller home.

In the sixth inning up 7-1, Miller led off with a walk, followed by a single by Jarvis, and then another outfield single by Chaw that moved Miller across the plate. Dartmouth scored its ninth run on an infield throwing error.

The Big Green scored four more times in the seventh on six hits. Freshman Alyssa Loyless singled with one out and advanced to third on a double by Miller. Both Loyless and Miller then scored on a single up the middle by Jarvis.

The team scored two more in the inning with two outs and a runner in scoring position. After a ground out by Chaw, sophomore Katie McEachern singled to the pitcher allowing Jarvis to score. McEachern scored the final run for Dartmouth on a single to the left side of the infield by senior Kara Curosh.

The Big Green will meet Utah State and the Vikings on Saturday afternoon.
