Northeast Credit Union Athlete of the Week - Hubert & Wefer
"One if by land, two if by sea." This week's outstanding athletes are competing on the field and on the water. Matt Wefer is on the Sailing team while Hillary Hubert is on the softball team. Wefer led the Big Green to a 3rd place finish at the Admiral Cup. Hubert began her weekend with two homeruns against Yale and ended the weekend with seven RBI and 14 total bases.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Northeast Credit Union Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Hubert, the Ivy Player of the Week, had an outstanding weekend at the plate against Yale. The second baseman hit .583 (7-of-12) with seven RBI and 14 total bases. Hubert opened the weekend with two home runs, her first career game with multiple home runs, and the first for a Big Green player since 2009. She tallied a hit in each game of the series and scored six runs over the weekend. Her slugging percentage of 1.167 and on base percentage of .625 were tops for the Big Green.
Currently on a five-game hitting streak, Hubert is leading the Big Green in batting average at .397 (52-131) and on base percentage at .441. Hubert also made some history and with her seven hits, set a new single-season record for hits with 52, besting the previous record of 51 set back in 1999 and 2000 by Sarah Damon. For her efforts Hubert also earned College Sports Madness Ivy League Player of the Week honors.
Dartmouth junior Matt Wefer has been named the Dartmouthsports.com Male Athlete of the week after leading the Big Green to a third place finish at the Admiral Cup, hosted by the US Merchant Marine Academy last weekend. Wefer and Avery Plough dominated their division, finishing in the top five in 12 of 15 races, and winning their division by 24 points. Their performance led the Big Green to a third place overall finish in the 15-team event, which was the most competitive event in both the conference and the country last weekend. The accolades don't stop there for the third-year sailor from Glen Head, N.Y., as he and Plough were also named the NEISA Coed Sailors of the Week. The duo became the first members of the Big Green to do so this spring.
