BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team pulled out some late game heroics with a 4-3 nine-inning win over Elon to open second day action at the FAU Parent’s Weekend Tournament before falling to Bethune Cookman, 2-1, in the nightcap.

Dartmouth (10-9) made history for the second consecutive day, as sophomore southpaw Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) set a new single-game record for strikeouts with 15 against Elon. Rumley broke the previous record of 13 set most recently during the 2004 season and also in 1999.

The Big Green opened second day action with a thrilling game against Elon.  With the game tied a 2-2 heading into the ninth inning, Rumley drilled a leadoff single, which pushed Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) to third base. With a Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) walk, the Big Green loaded the bases and with a sacrifice fly from Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) Lohmann scored. Rumley scored the game-winning run on a error, giving the Big Green the win.

Elon added a run in the ninth as well, but two strikeouts from Rumley ended the threat. Rumley threw 9.0 innings of work and allowed just one earned run, while picking up her ninth win of the season. The Texas native also starred at the plate, going 2-of-4 with the game-winning run.

For the second day, Dartmouth got on the board first against the Phoenix, with a single run in the second inning. With one out, Lohmann reached after being walked and Rumley singled to right field putting two runners on. St. Romain belted a RBI single through left field that plated Lohmann and put the Big Green ahead, 1-0.

The game was a defensive battle until the sixth inning when Elon’s Tomeka Watson opened with a leadoff home run to left center, tying the game at 1-1. Neither team had a chance in the seventh inning as both teams failed to put a runner on base.

In the eighth inning, the teams matched each other with a run each   McEachern extended her hitting streak to seven consecutive games, with an RBI single that plated Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) and the Phoenix used a sac bunt to put two runners on and came around the bases on a RBI single up the middle.

Dartmouth squared off with Bethune-Cookman for the fourth time this season in the late game. The Wildcats put two runs on the board in the first inning and were able to hold on for the win.

Bethune Cookman used a leadoff single followed by a triple to score the first run while a RBI single from Simone Cesar played Aurelia Gamach.

The Big Green took one run back with a run in the bottom of the second inning from Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.). McCalmon reached on an error and moved into scoring position with a ground out and came home with a triple from Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas).

Miller led the offense going 3-of-3 from the plate Rumley and Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) added the other hits for the Big Green.  McCalmon threw 7.0 innings of work and allowed two runs on six hits and tossed four strikeouts.

McCalmon, who started in the circle, kept the Wildcats off the board for the remainder of the contest and the Big Green looked as if they might tack another run on in the fourth inning. Lohmann got on base with a walk and moved to second with a single from Miller. The Big Green had another chance in the sixth inning when Rumley reached third but Dartmouth couldn’t find a way to plate her for the tying run.

The Big Green close out tournament action against host FAU on Sunday at 9 a.m.
