CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team opened second day action at the USF Invitational with a 4-3 loss to Rhode Island on Saturday (March 16). Rhode Island set the tone with three runs in the first inning. The Big Green defeated Quinnipiac 4-0 in the late game.

The Rams opened the game with a leadoff triple that gave Rhode Island a base runner early. With back-to-back walks the Rams loaded the bases and a single up the middle sent two runners around the bases. Rhode Island (4-9) tacked on another run in the second inning.

Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) and Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) went 2-of-4 from the plate while Hubert added two RBI. In the circle, Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) tossed a complete game and struck out six.

Dartmouth (6-4) had trouble from the plate against the Rams early and didn't get its first hit until the third inning. Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) had a leadoff single to get on base, but the offense couldn't get her around the bases.

The Big Green got hot in the fifth inning and tacked on two runs. Rhiannon Saucedo (Las Cruces, N.M.) was walked to open the inning and Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)  singled to left field and Curosh followed with a bunt that loaded the bases. Hubert brought two home with a two-RBI single to left field to make it just a two run game.

Dartmouth added another run in the seventh inning, using singles from Curosh and Hubert to put runners on base. Curosh rounded the bases on a RBI single from Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.).

In the late game, the Big Green shutout Quinnipiac, 4-0. McCalmon went 2-of-3 from the plate with a single and a home run.

Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) shut the Bobcats down from the circle. The sophomore had five strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings of work. Alex Jarvis (Tustin, Calif.) tossed two innings of work allowing just one hit.

The Big Green used a big fifth inning to pick up its seventh win of the season. With a 1-0 lead, Dartmouth opened the inning with a single from Hubert to put a runner on base. Singles from Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) and McEachern led to three Dartmouth runs.
