BIG GREEN TIDBITS
Strong Start to the Season - The Big Green opened the 2013 season with an impressive showing at the Stetson Hatter Classic. The Big Green's 3-2 win over Bethune-Cookman was its third consecutive season-opening victory and the three wins on the weekend puts the program 12 wins away from its 300th victory. At this weekend's tournament, the Big Green enter as the only team with a winning record.
Hubert and Miller Earn All-Tournament Honors - Senior captain Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) and freshman Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) earned All-Tournament honors for their play over the weekend. Both players started each game for the Big Green and tallied six hits each. Hubert had six RBI while Miller had three RBI to go along with three doubles and one triple.
Extra Innings - The Big Green played their first extra innings game vs. Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. The last time Dartmouth went to extra innings on opening weekend was during the 2009 season when they posted a 3-2 win over St. Francis (Pa.) at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament. Last season, Dartmouth played one extra inning game vs. North Texas resulting in a 7-6 win.
Rookies Making a Statement - The Dartmouth freshman class certainly made a statement in their first weekend in uniform. Each player saw action with Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas), Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.), Kathy Dzienkowski (Austin, Texas) and Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) starting each game. Of Dartmouth's 36 overall hits, rookies accounted for 16.
Home Run Queen - Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) made quite the statement in her first collegiate at bat by belting a home run. On the weekend, she had a team-high two home runs while classmate Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) added another.
Bring The Bats - The Big Green had a big weekend from the plate with 36 hits over the course of the three-day tournament, including eight extra base hits. Hubert and Miller each recorded six hits, while Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) and Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) added four.
Rumley Up To Her Old Tricks in the Circle - Sophomore Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) started the 2013 season right where she left off in 2012. Rumley went 3-1 in the circle last weekend for a 2.23 ERA and added 18 strikeouts. She moves into No. 7 on Dartmouth's career strikeouts list with 169 Ks.
On The Road Again - The Big Green will travel to our nations capital for the George Washington Colonials Classic for their second preseason tournament this week. Washington D.C., and Florida are the only places the Big Green will play tournaments this season. Dartmouth will play in four preseason tournaments this year.
On The Road Again - The Big Green, like most Northern schools, will spend a large chunk of its season on the road. Of the 50 games on the schedule, Dartmouth will play 36 games on the road, 26 coming in the form of non-conference competition. Dartmouth will once again take up residence in Florida, traveling to DeLand, Clearwater, and Boca Raton, for tournaments. In all, the Big Green will play 19 games in the Sunshine State between the USF Invitational and the FAU Invitational and non-conference games with Florida Gulf Coast, South Florida and Rutgers. The Big Green open the home slate on April 5 and will play seven home dates at the Dartmouth Softball Park.
Welcome to the Team - Dartmouth welcomes a six-member freshman class this season. The Big Green rookies hail from all over the country, with two players coming from the Texas. Donning the Green and White for the first time are: Kathy Dzienkowski (Austin, Texas), Alex Jarvis (Tustin, Calif.), Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.), Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.), Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) and Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas). Welcome aboard!
Welcome to Dartmouth, Coach Hart - Assistant coach Ali Hart joins the Dartmouth softball staff this season. Hart hails from Atlanta, Ga., and was an All-American at Williams College where she graduated in 2012.
