ALBANY, N.Y. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped its midweek doubleheader to Albany on Wednesday (April 18) afternoon. Dartmouth was shutout in both games for the first time this season.
Despite mustering only four hits on the afternoon, Dartmouth's freshmen pitchers were a bright spot. Freshman left hander Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) fanned 12 batters, one shy of the single-game record and moved into third-pace on Dartmouth's single-season record with 107 strikeouts this season.
Classmate Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) also had an impressive game. Playing in relief in the second game, Hein allowed no runs and no hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Dartmouth (10-19) struggled to find any offense in the first game against the Great Danes. Shortstop Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) tallied the lone hit of the game to open the seventh inning but nobody else could get anything going.
It was a pitchers duel through the first three innings but Albany broke through in the fourth inning for two runs. The inning opened with a strikeout before a single through the left side from Diane MacDowell provided the first hit of the game for either team.
After stealing second base, McDowell scored on a Big Green throwing error and another single added another run for the Great Danes, putting them ahead, 2-0, entering the fifth inning.
The Big Green failed to get a base runner in the fifth or sixth inning but the Great Danes sealed up the victory with two runs in the sixth inning. Vicky McFarland nailed a homer to left field while bases loaded single in the next at bat sent MacDowell around the bases. Junior pitcher Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) came in in relief in the sixth inning facing four batters allowing two runs on three hits.
Curosh's single in the seventh ended the Great Dane no-hitter but Dartmouth couldn't get anything going from the plate ending the game with a strikeout and a groundout.
The second game was more of the same as the Big Green against went hitless through the third inning.
Albany (28-10) didn't waste anytime getting on the board and tacked on a run in the home half of the first inning. McDowell added her fourth run of the day on an RBI single from Charlise Castro. The Great Dane added to their tally in the third inning scoring three runs on four hits with one left on base.
The Big Green finally got a hit with a leadoff double from senior first baseman Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) but left her stranded at third base with a groundout and a lineout to end the threat.
Dartmouth made a pitching change in the fourth inning and brought in l Hein from the bullpen. Hein replaced starter Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) who threw 3.0 innings of work allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Hicks' double seemed to get the Big Green bats going as Katie Adams (Bothell, Wash.) added a single in the fifth inning but Dartmouth couldn't do anything with it as the inning ended with Adams stranded at first base. Dartmouth managed another hit from junior second baseman Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) to leadoff the seventh inning but that was the final hit of the game, as the Big Green was kept of the board for the second consecutive game.
Dartmouth returns to the Dartmouth Softball Park this weekend for a North Division series against Yale. The Big Green and Bulldogs will play a four-game series starting on Saturday (April 21).
