PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Dartmouth softball team opened North Division Play with a doubleheader sweep of Brown on Saturday (April 14) afternoon at the Brown Softball Field. The doubleheader sweep was the first for the Big Green in Ivy League action.
The first game was in a stalemate with the teams combining for just one hit until the top of the fifth inning when the Big Green got on the board with two early runs.
In the visitor half of the inning, with two outs, Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) nailed a double to right center which started a chain of doubles for the Big Green. Britta McOmber (Chatham, N.J.) followed with another double to the same spot that scored Curosh. Freshman Rhiannon Saucedo (Las Cruces, N.M.) added the third hit of the inning that scored McOmber and gave the Big Green a 2-0 lead.
Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) added another hit for the Big Green with her second home run of the season to put the Big Green up 3-0 heading into the sixth inning.
Brown mustered a rally in the home half of the sixth inning and took a 4-3 lead with four runs. The Bears opened the inning with a single to left center, she stole second and then came home on a two-run home run from Kelsey Horn. The Bears added on two more runs with another home run.
Dartmouth (10-15, 3-7 Ivy League) answered in the seventh inning with some strategic play. Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) reached on a error and stole second base. The Big Green loaded the bases after Curosh and McOmber reached on fielders choices. Junior third baseman Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) completed the rally with a thee-RBI triple that sealed the win for the Big Green.
Brown (6-20, 3-7 Ivy League) tried to answer but after loading the bases failed to get a hit ending the inning with a strikeout and a groundout. Barker was 2-of-3 from the plate with a run scored. Curosh and McOmber also scored two runs each.
Starter freshman Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) threw 5.1 innings of work with nine strikeouts and four runs scored. Gray pitched 1.0 inning and picked up the win while Barker earned her first save of the season.
The second game started the same way as the first game. Dartmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Dartmouth placed Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) and Curosh on base with walks and both came home with a RBI double from Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.). Hicks came home in the next at bat when Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) hit another double.
Dartmouth added another run in the top of the third. Ramirez, who reached on an error, came home with a double from Barker.
Brown again made things interesting in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Emma Blake scored the first run after being walked in. In all, the Bears scored three runs on no hits and left two on base, cutting Dartmouth's lead to 4-3.
The comeback kids had an answer in the form of a home run from Barker, her second of the day, pushing the lead to 5-3 heading into the home half of the inning.
The Big Green didn't stop there adding on six more runs over the course of the next two innings.
Dartmouth exploded for a season-high 13 hits in the second game. Hicks led the way with three hits, going 3-of-4 with one run and two RBIs. Barker threw 7.0 innings of work allowing just three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday (April 15) with a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
