ITHACA, N.Y. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Cornell on Saturday at Niemand-Robison Field. The Big Green fell, 4-2,in the early game and dropped the late game 10-8.

In the late game, the Big Green struck first with a three-run first inning. Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) opened with a double to right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch, she went around the bases on an RBI single from Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) for the first score of the game.

Dartmouth (7-12, 0-4 Ivy League) wasn't done and with two outs, Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) nailed a single up the middle that scored Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) and kept runners in scoring position for the Big Green. After Ramirez stole second base, Everett scored on a throwing error putting the Big Green up 3-0 early.

Cornell (12-11, 3-1 Ivy League) kept it close with two runs in the second inning. With a single to open the inning, the Big Red nailed their second home run of the day, making the score, 3-2.

Jenny Edwards tied the ballgame with a home run, the third of the day for the Big Red, in the bottom of the third inning. Cornell kept its rally going and with two home runs in the bottom of the fourth and no outs, started to pull away taking a 6-3 lead and forcing the Big Green to bring in senior Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) to pitch.

The Big Red added four more runs but Dartmouth tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning with four runs. Barker doubled to open the inning and freshman Rhiannon Saucedo (Las Cruces, N.M.) followed with a single. After a throwing error, Barker rounded the bases and an RBI groundout from Curosh kept the rally alive scoring Saucedo. Two more runs came in making the score, 10-8, but that was as close as Dartmouth would get dropping the second game.

Hicks was 2-of-3 in the second game with two runs scored and a home run to lead the Dartmouth offense. Ramirez also added two hits.

In the first game of the day, Cornell got on the board first with the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After a fly out to open the inning, Big Red leftfielder Lauren Buculo hit a home run to left field to open the scoring.

Dartmouth wouldn't be discouraged and responded with a run of its own in the top of the third inning. After a lineout to open the inning, Curosh reached on an error and rounded the bases when pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) hit single to left field. Rumley, who moved all the way to third with a throwing error, was left stranded when a popup ended the inning with the score notched at 1-1.

Cornell used a three-run fifth inning to extend its lead to 4-1.  Cawley used a bunt single to third base and with two outs the Big Red used a three-run home run from Edwards that extended the Cornell lead.

The Big Green added a home run of its own in the seventh inning from third baseman Ramirez to cut the lead to 4-2, which ended up being the final score.

Rumley threw 6.0 innings of work with four strikeouts; She allowed four runs on five hits with no walks.  Rumley was also 2-of-3 from the plate while teammates Hicks and Ramirez also added hits in the loss.

Dartmouth is back on the field next weekend when it welcomes Penn and Columbia to Hanover, N.H., for its home-opening weekend.  Dartmouth squares off with Penn on Friday in doubleheader action beginning at 2 p.m., and closes with Columbia on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m.
