CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Dartmouth softball team couldn't muster up much offense against Boston College on Saturday (March 25) and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Eagles. The Big Green fell, 2-1, in the first game and closed the day with an 11-0 loss.

The first game between the Big Green and Eagles was a low scoring affair with Dartmouth striking first with a run in the second inning.  With one out, Dartmouth slammed home its first home run of the season when Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) hit a long ball to center field to give the Big Green the early, 1-0 lead.

It looked as if the Big Green might tack on another run in the inning. After the home run, leftfielder Megan Averitt (Alameda, Calif.) was walked and she then stole second base. Averitt used her wheels to steal third base but pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) lined out to end the inning.

After the Dartmouth run, the game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Eagles tied the game up with a home run of their own from Maria Pandolfo in the first at bat of the inning, tying the game at 1-1.

The Big Green couldn't seem to get much going after that. Dartmouth opened the sixth inning with a groundout while Everett reached on an error, giving the Big Green a base runner.  Everett stole second base but couldn't move anymore with the inning ending after a strikeout and a groundout.

The Eagles sealed the game with a run in the top of the sixth. The inning opened with a walk from Alana DiMaso. DiMaso moved to second on a single from Nicole D'Argento while both runners moved on a sacrifice bunt on the next at bat. DiMaso came around the bases for the game-winner with another sacrifice in the next at-bat.

Dartmouth couldn't rally in the seventh and closed the game with a two groundouts and a fly out. The Big Green and Eagles were pretty evenly matched in the first game with three hits each. Everett was 1-of-1 from the plate while Rumley was 2-of-4 on the afternoon.

Rumley, who pitched 6.0 innings of work, had seven strikeouts and one walk while allowing three hits and two runs. Katie Adams (Kent, Wash.) and Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) combined for 11 putouts in the first game.

The Big Green's offense continued to sputter in the second game as Dartmouth was shutout for the second time all season and played its second shortened game. Boston College opened the scoring with a three-run second inning and didn't look back.  The Eagles put a runner on base after the first batter was hit by a pitch and then was moved with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single sent Brittany Wilkins around the bases for the first score of the day.  The Eagles added two more runs with their second home run of the day from Andrea Filler.

The Big Green's lone hit in the second game came in the third inning. With two outs, Averitt hit a single to the shortstop but Dartmouth couldn't come up with any offense to bring her around the bases with a groundout to end the inning.

The Eagles sealed their second win of the day over the Big Green with a six-run  third inning, which included two home runs. After a hitless fourth inning for the Big Green, Boston College tacked on two more runs to end the game in extra innings.

Averitt had the Big Green's lone run of the game and utilized pitchers Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.), Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) and Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.). Gray started the game and pitched 2.0 innings allowing four runs on three hits with one strikeout while Barker had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

Dartmouth is back in action on Tuesday (March 27) for a single game at UMass before jumping into Ivy League action on Friday (March 30) at Princeton and Sunday (March 31) at Cornell.
