PHILADELPHIA – The Dartmouth softball team came up just short in its bid for the 2013 Ivy League title dropping a 3-2 contest to Penn at Penn Park on Sunday (May 5). In the third pitching duel of the series, it turned out to be a home run from Penn’s Kayla Dahlerbruch in the fourth inning, that gave the Quakers a 3-2 win and the 2013 Ivy League Championship.

“This was a tough loss but I am proud of this team,” said head coach Rachel Hanson. “They fought from the first pitch of the season to the last and played a high level of softball along the way. Their level of determination and grit has set a new standard of excellence for Dartmouth softball.”

Dartmouth, who was bidding to become the first road team to win the Ivy League Championship series, was led by excellent pitching from Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) and relief pitcher Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.).

In 3.1 innings, Rumley scattered five hits and allowing just two earned runs. She concludes her sophomore season as the all-time leader in strikeouts with 336 and is the new single-season leader with 186.  McCalmon came in and pitched 2.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts and allowed just two hits.

The Big Green held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth inning. Rumley and the Dartmouth defense set down the last four Quaker batters, after Penn scored their first run back in the second inning.

A leadoff double from Samantha Erosa to start the fourth gave the host team a base runner while a fielding error placed Brooke Coloma on base. Erosa capitalized on a Dartmouth miscue and tacked on a run before Dahlerbruch’s home run.

Dartmouth had a chance to tie things up late in the contest and placed runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings. With two outs in the fifth inning, Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) started a rally with a single up the middle followed by another single from Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.). Although Penn’s Alexis Borden ended the rally with a strikeout.

Rumley and McEachern combined for four of the Big Green’s eight hits on the afternoon. Rumley and McCalmon also each tallied an RBI.

The Big Green put another runner on base in the sixth sparked by a leadoff single from relief pitcher Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.). Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.), in as a pinch hitter, nailed a single up the middle in the next at bat moving a runner into scoring position. Alex St. Romain (Chatham, N.J.) reached on a fielder’s choice but McCalmon was out at second base.  Borden again stifled the rally with a strikeout and the inning ended with a foul out.

Dartmouth came out of the gates hitting and was able to plate a run in the first inning. With one strikeout, Rumley hit single through right center field to put the first runner on base in the contest. Hubert reached on a walk in the next at bat, and a single from McEachern plated Rumley.

The Big Green kept Penn of the bases in the home half of the inning and went back to work in the top of the second. With one out, Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) nailed a standup double to the right field wall and with a single from Rumley, her second consecutive hit, the big Green tacked on another run to take a 2-0 lead.

The Quakers picked up their first hit of the day with a single but a heads up double play, started with a quick throw from shortstop McEachern, cleared the bases. Penn did get one run back but kept the lead with the Big Green heading to the third inning.

The Big Green close a record-setting 2013 season with a 26-20 record. Dartmouth’s 15 Ivy League wins set a new program record and its 26 wins are the most for the Big Green since the 2002 season.
