HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team closed its first Ivy League home weekend with a split against South Division foe, Princeton, at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Saturday (April 6). Dartmouth (14-16) won the first game 4-1 and fell in the late contest, 9-7.

Game One: Big Sixth Inning Powers Dartmouth to 4-1 Win (Dartmouth 4, Princeton 1)
The first game could be characterized as a defensive battle as the teams combined for just one run through the first four innings.

Rookie Kathy Dzienkowski (Austin, Texas) continued her excellent play from the Cornell series and earned a start as the designated player. The change proved worthy as she nailed her first collegiate home run in the second inning, putting the Big Green ahead early.

Southpaw Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas), who pitched 12 innings against Cornell, was stellar, picking up her 13th win as she scattered seven hits, allowing just one run and tossing six strikeouts. She was also key from the plate, going 2-of-3 with two RBI and one run.

The Tigers had trouble generating any offense with just two hits through the fifth inning. In the fifth the visitors used a leadoff single from Maddie Cousens to get on base. Cousens moved to second on a sacrifice and was brought home on a RBI single from Nikki Chu but it would be the lone run of the contest.

Dartmouth was able to seal the game in the sixth and capitalized on two Princeton errors. A leadoff single from Hillary Hubert  (Grant Park, Ill.), gave the Big Green a base runner and two errors placed runners on second and third. A Rumley single, brought pinch runner Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) home while an RBI double from Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) brought Rumley and Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) home.

Princeton put two on base in the seventh, but Rumley shut down Emily Viggers to give the Big Green the win.

Game Two: Late Comeback Not Enough in Loss to Princeton (Princeton 9, Dartmouth 7)
The Big Green took an early 2-0 lead courtesy of a two-RBI double from Hubert in the first inning, but Princeton rallied and used a four-run second inning to take a 4-2 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Dartmouth was able to get one run back in the second inning. Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) drilled a two-out double down the right field line and Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) followed with a double of her own to plate Lohmann, making the score 4-3, Tigers.

Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings, but Princeton (20-11, 5-3 Ivy) added two runs in the fifth and added three in the sixth, taking a commanding 7-3 lead.

Alex Jarvis (Tustin, Calif.) came in to pitch for the Big Green and got things rolling. She allowed no runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Meanwhile, the Dartmouth hitters found some momentum. In the sixth inning, Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) nailed a home run and Jarvis got in on the party with a homer of her own to cut the lead to 9-5 heading into the seventh.

Princeton looked as if they might add to their lead by loading the bases with back-to-back singles and fielder’s choice, but the inning ended with a line out to centerfield.

Hubert started the seventh inning rally with a single to left center and McEachern nailed her team-leading sixth home run of the year to make it a two-run game with no outs. That was as close as Dartmouth would get as the Big Green closed the game with a strikeout, groundout and fly out.

McEachern, Hubert and Curosh each went 2-of-4 from the plate. McEachern also added two RBI in the loss.
