Big Green Split Action at Penn To Close Ivy Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – For the second consecutive day, the Dartmouth softball team took the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Penn, winning 4-1, but failed to complete the sweep dropping the nightcap, 3-1.

Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) led the way in the first game going 2-of-4 from the plate with two runs and two RBIs. For the doubleheader, Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) was 3-of-6 from the plate and Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) added her third home run of the weekend.

In the first game, the home team got on the board first with a run courtesy of a triple from Sydney Turchin. Turchin’s tripled to open the game and was brought home on a fielder’s choice.

Dartmouth (13-13) got on the board in the third inning. With one out, Curosh singles through the left side and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. An RBI single from  Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) sent Curosh home and tied the game.

The Big Green sealed the win in the fourth inning. Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) nailed a single to open the inning and with two outs, Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) hit a RBI double down the right field line to plate Rumley. Dartmouth wasn’t done and Curosh belted a home run, her first of the season to left center bring in two more runs and sealing the victory.

Rumley threw a complete game in the opener and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts.

Penn rallied in the late game and used seven hits to salvage the split with the Big Green. The host team scored three runs in the second inning courtesy of four hits.

Dartmouth scored its lone run of the game in the third inning a, home run from McEachern but couldn’t find a way to put any more runs across, leaving seven batters stranded in the contest.

Rumley picked up the loss in the second game, giving up three runs in 0.2 innings. Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) came in to close out and scattered three hits while fanning six batters. 

The Big Green will open the 2013 home slate on Friday when they welcome Cornell to the Dartmouth Softball Park for doubleheader action. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
