WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Dartmouth softball team rallied for a seventh inning, 2-1, win over George Washington in second day action at the Colonial Classic. The win gave the Big Green a split for the day, as they dropped their first game to Seton Hall, 5-0.
The nightcap featured an impressive seventh-inning rally for the visiting Big Green. Trailing 1-0 heading into the seventh inning, the Dartmouth bats went to work. George Washington walked Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) to open the inning. Another walk put Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) on base and a Morgan Wharton (Binghamton, N.Y.) single through the middle sent Hubert and McEachern home giving the Big Green the 2-1 advantage.
The Dartmouth defense shut the host Colonials down in the home half of the inning. Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) came in to close out the game and with three groundouts, the Big Green earned the split.
Wharton had a great afternoon with three hits and two RBI. Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) also added two hits on the afternoon.
The Big Green pitchers had good outings as well. In the late game, Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) earned the start and after throwing one inning was relieved by Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.). The rookie, who picked up her first collegiate win, put in five innings of work allowing one run on three hits.
The Big Green had a hard time generating any offense in the first game of the day against Seton Hall, connecting on just three hits on the afternoon.
After two scoreless innings, the Pirates utilized a five-run third inning to jump ahead. Seton Hall used six hits to score five runs and blow the game open. The inning opened with a double from Jackie DiPietro, followed by a single from Hammer to put two runners in scoring position. DiPietro scored on a fielder's choice and a single in the next at bat brought home two more.
Dartmouth's defense kept the Pirates from getting on the board again, but they couldn't send anyone around the bases. It looked as if the Big Green might strike in the fifth inning with a double from Wharton, but she was caught stealing to end the threat.
The Big Green had one more single in the seventh inning from Curosh. The shortstop was able to get all the way to third base, but was left stranded with a fly out and a strikeout to end the game.
Rumley and Alex Jarvis (Tustin, Calif.) split time in the circle. Jarvis' appearance was her first in the circle and in two innings she allowed four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Rumley came in for the final five innings and fanned five batters while allowing just one run.
Curosh was 2-of-3 from the plate and Wharton added a double.
Dartmouth will close action at the Colonial Classic on Sunday (March 2) when they take on Bucknell at 11:45 a.m.
