DELAND, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team split in second day action at the Stetson Hatter Classic. The Big Green cruised in a 6-2 win over Florida A&M to open the day and dropped an extra inning affair to Bethune-Cookman in the late game.
Senior captain Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) and Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) led the offense, each recording three hits on the day, while Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) added a team-best three runs. Hubert tallied a team-high four RBIs while Freshman Katie McEachern (San Diego, Calif.) contributed three RBIs.
In the circle, the Big Green used three pitchers. Rumley picked up her second win of the season in the first game against Florida A&M and came in as a relief pitcher against Bethune-Cookman. Morgan McCalmon (Norman, Okla.) saw time in the nightcap and threw 6.1 innings of work with five strikeouts. Rachel Hein (Olathe, Kan.) also saw action against Bethune-Cookman tossing a half inning.
Dartmouth (2-2) played a nail biter with Bethune-Cookman in the nightcap. The teams, who were meeting for the second time in tournament action, provided lots of offense late in the game.
With the teams deadlocked at 0-0 entering the fourth inning, Bethune-Cookman got on the board first. Calesha Shelley walked to open the inning and stole second on the next at bat. Teammate Simone Ceasar hit a single to right center and then stole second putting two runners in scoring position. A two RBI triple sent both home and gave the Wildcats the lead.
The Big Green responded in the bottom of the fifth. Dartmouth put two runners on base when Curosh was walked and Rumley reached on an error. With three on base and one out, Hubert nailed a single to left field plating Curosh and getting Dartmouth on the board. A ground out and a wild pitch sent two more around the bases as the Big Green took a 3-2 lead.
From that point, the teams matched each other, score for score. With a run in the top of the seventh inning, Bethune-Cookman tied the game at 6-6. The Big Green tried to answer and placed a runner on base when Rhiannon Saucedo (Las Cruces, N.M.) reached on an error, but Dartmouth couldn't get anything going which sent the game ton extra innings.
The Wildcats struck first, with a run with no outs and went on to score two more runs to take a 9-6 lead. Dartmouth put a runner in scoring position but couldn't get anything going dropping the game in eight innings.
Dartmouth opened the second day of action with firepower from the outset, scoring three runs in the first inning against Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats walked leadoff hitter Curosh and pitcher Rumley tacked on the first hit of the game with a single up the middle. Kelsey Miller (Mansfield, Texas) lined out in the next at bat, but classmate McCalmon responded with a single to left field, which loaded the bases.
Hubert who had three hits in first day action, nailed a three RBI double in her first at bat of the afternoon giving the Big Green a 3-0 advantage.
Florida A&M tried to answer in the second inning. Catcher Rob Roberson reached on a throwing error and advanced to second with a stolen base, but the Rattlers popped up to Big Green shortstop Curosh to end the innings.
The game became somewhat of a defensive battle until the sixth inning, when they Rattlers finally got on the board. Using a leadoff single, Florida A&M put its first runner on base since the fourth inning. The Rattlers loaded the bases on a fielders choice and sent a runner home on a sacrifice fly.
Dartmouth pushed its lead to 6-1 on the strength of a three-run seventh inning. Brianna Lohmann (Belle Glade, Fla.) reached on throwing error to open the inning and advanced to second on the play. Hubert picked up her second hit of the afternoon with a single to the shortstop and advanced a base on a throwing error, which scored Lohmann. McEachern belted her first collegiate home run sending two home and giving Dartmouth a commanding 6-1 lead. Florida A&M (3-10) added another run in the bottom of the inning, but Dartmouth secured the victory.
As a team, the Big Green had six runs on six hits with five RBIs against the Rattlers. Hubert led the offense going 2-of-3 with three RBIs while Rumley picked up her second win of the early season throwing seven innings of work allowing just two runs to go with four strikeouts.
Dartmouth closes out action at the Hatter Classic on Sunday when they face Bethune-Cookman at 12 p.m.
