CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth softball team split the first doubleheader of a four-game series with league leader, Harvard, on Saturday (April 28) at Soldier Field. The win was Dartmouth's first over the Crimson since 2009.

"We played two, well played games today," said head coach Rachel Hanson. "Our pitchers did a great job od keeping them off balance and our hitters backed them up with some timely hits. We'll need to play at the same level tomorrow. "

The first game was a great outing for the Big Green as they were able to keep the Crimson off balance in the batters box as well as capitalize on the offensive side of things.

First baseman Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) put the first hit on the board for either team in the second inning with a single to center field. Second baseman Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.), sent Hicks around the bases on the next at bat with a RBI double to the right center field to put the Big Green up, 1-0 in the second inning.

Harvard threatened to even the score in the home half of the inning after a double from Alison Scott, but a popup and a strikeout ended the threat, leaving two Crimson batters stranded and giving left handed pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) four strikeouts after two inning of play.

Leftfielder Megan Averitt (Alameda, Calif.) tacked on another run for the Big Green in the top of the fourth inning, to put the Big Green up, 2-0.  Designated player Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) opened the inning with a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hicks. She rounded the bases on a RBI single from Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) to keep the Green ahead.

Harvard wouldn't go quietly and was able to place runners at second and third with two outs but Rumley threw her sixth strikeout and the threat ended with a groundout to shortstop.

Rumley showcased her skills at the plate in the top of the sixth inning. She hit a leadoff double and Barker followed with a double of her own, which scored Rumley and gave the Big Green a 3-0 lead. The Crimson answered back with a run of its own from Shelbi Olsen. She came home on an RBI single from Adrienne Hume, to cut the Big Green lead to 3-2 heading into the decisive seventh inning.

Dartmouth tacked on another run in the top of the seventh courtesy of a run from Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.). After being walked to open the inning, she rounded the bases on a RBI double from shortstop Kara Curosh (Munster, Ind.) down the left field line. Rumley ended any hopes of a Harvard comeback setting each of the Crimson batters down.

The late game was a pitchers dual through the first four innings when the Big Green final broke through on the scoreboard.

Hubert recorded the first hit of the game for the Big Green with a single to right field. Barker followed with a single and moved another base on a Harvard error. Hubert gave Dartmouth the early lead on a RBI single from Ramirez.

Barker was great in the circle and threw 6.0 innings of work. She allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

The Crimson used two runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The opened the inning with a leadoff double followed by single. After a stolen base, Adrienne Hume scored on a error. Harvard pushed another run across before the end of the inning.

The Big Green used a single from Ramirez in the seventh, but that was as close as the Big Green would get as the game ended on a caught stealing followed by a strikeout and a groundout.

Dartmouth will close out the 2012 season on Sunday (April 29) when the Crimson travel to Hanover, N.H. The Big Green will hold dedication festivities for the Dartmouth Softball Park and will honor the 2012 Senior Class.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
