HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth softball team dropped its opening doubleheader of a four-game series with the Yale Bulldogs at the Dartmouth Softball Park on Saturday (April 21).
In the circle, lefthander Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas) threw 6.0 innings of work allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts. She moved into No. 2 on Dartmouth's single-season strikeout list with 111. Senior Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) pitched the final inning of the first game, and went the distance in game two. For the afternoon she threw 8.0 innings of work and allowed five runs on eight hits.
In the first game a two-run home run from Tori Balta in the fifth inning proved to be the difference. Dartmouth (10-21, 3-11 Ivy League) had a 2-1 lead thanks to two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
After a strikeout to open the inning, Yale pitcher walked second baseman Rhiannon Saucedo (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Rumley added a single to right field that started the Big Green rally. Bulldog pitcher Chelsey Dunham walked in both Rumley and St. Romain to put the Big Green ahead, 2-1.
Rumley and the Dartmouth defense kept the Bulldogs off the board until the pivotal fifth inning. With one out, Jennifer Ong reached on an error from the third baseman and in the next at bat, Balta nailed just the second home run of the season for Yale, to take the lead.
The Big Green had a chance to even things up in the sixth inning. A leadoff single from Barker and single from Saucedo gave the Big Green two base runners. Dartmouth loaded the bases with a walk but a ground out ended the threat.
The Big Green placed Curosh on base in the seventh but couldn't' get any offense going to send her home.
Yale (10-28, 3-11 Ivy League) opened the second game with three runs in the first inning, forcing the Big Green to play from behind.
With two singles in their first at bats of the game, shortstop Meg Johnson hit a two RBI double to left field to put the Bulldogs ahead. Johnson came home herself on an error from Dartmouth's third baseman.
Curosh didn't waste time getting a hit and had a leadoff double to open the game. Dartmouth had two base runners when Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) was walked but couldn't find a way to send anyone around the bases.
Yale added a run in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead but Dartmouth got some of the runs back in the home half of the inning. Curosh hit a single to center field followed by a singe from Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) and Ramirez, to load the bases. Curosh came home on an error from the Yale pitcher while Hicks scored on a sacrifice fly from Saucedo, to cut the Yale lead in half.
Yale added another home run in the fifth inning to make it 5-2 before Dartmouth made things interesting.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) nailed a double to left field. St. Romain, pinch hitting for Jonele Conceicao (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) belted a two-run home run to make the score 5-4 heading into the final inning.
Barker set the Yale batters down in order but Dartmouth's comeback fell short as the Big Green failed to get a base runner in the final frame.
Dartmouth and Yale will close the series on Sunday (April 22). The schedule for Sunday has been moved up an hour due to expected weather in the area. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., at the Dartmouth Softball Park.
