HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth softball team christened the new Dartmouth Softball Park with a, 1-0, win over Penn, handing the Quakers their first Ivy League loss, in its home opener on Friday (April 6). The Big Green dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 6-2.
Dartmouth (8-13, 1-5 Ivy League) got some outstanding pitching in the first game thanks to the play of freshman pitcher Kristen Rumley (Katy, Texas). Rumley, who also hit leadoff, fanned 10 batters in 7.0 innings of work allowing just one run on three hits.
The Big Green had three hits in the first game but none bigger then senior pitcher Hillary Barker's (Duvall, Wash.) home run, the first home run in the Dartmouth Softball Park, which propelled Dartmouth to its first win in seven tries.
"The first game was a great complete game," said head coach Rachel Hanson. "Our defense was sharp and Kristen pitched exceptionally well. Hillary just hit a great bomb off a very good pitcher. It was great to christen the new field with a win and tomorrow our task is to stay defensively sharp in both games."
Penn (20-11, 5-1 Ivy League) had the first hit of the game with a double from Elysse Gorney in the second at bat of the inning but that was the only hit for the Quakers until the fourth when they used a single from Brooke Coloma.
Dartmouth looked like it might round the bases in the second inning with a leadoff single from third baseman Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.). She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from second baseman Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) but she was left stranded with two strikeouts to end the inning.
After a three-up, three-down inning for Penn in the fourth, Dartmouth broke through on the scoreboard. Barker nailed her first home run of the season on the first pitch of the inning, sending it just over the leftfield wall giving the Big Green the 1-0 advantage.
The Quakers walked leftfielder Megan Averitt (Alameda, Calif.) to give Dartmouth a base runner in the next at bat. It looked like Averitt might add another Dartmouth run after advancing to third with a stolen base and a passed ball but the two strikeouts and a fly out.
Penn didn't threaten for the rest of the game, only putting on base runner on in the last four innings of the game. The win was Dartmouth's third shutout of the season.
In the late game, Penn used a four-run fourth inning, en route to a 6-2 win, salvaging the split.
After being held to just three hits in the first game, the Quakers tallied eight hits in the second game and got things going in the second inning. With a leadoff single followed by a runner on base as a result of a Dartmouth error, a RBI single from Karina Rios put the Quakers on the board for the first time on the afternoon.
In the decisive fourth inning, the Quakers did most of their damage with two outs, starting with a home run from Samantha Erosa, followed by a single, an error and a double which allowed four runs on four hits allowing Penn to take a 5-0 lead.
Dartmouth was able to cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Ramirez hit a leadoff single and moved to second on an error from the Penn pitcher and when Hubert was walked the Big Green loaded the bases. Ramirez and Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) were out at home plate but a single from Barker sent both Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) and Hubert home to get the Big Green on the board.
The Big Green utilized three pitchers in the late contest with Rumley getting the start for the second consecutive game. In 2.2 innings of work she allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Barker, who came in to close, had four strikeouts and allowed just one run. Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) pitched one inning and had three strikeouts.
Dartmouth is back on the diamond Saturday (April 7) when they welcome Columbia to the Dartmouth Softball Park for an Ivy League doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
