Sean Furey 04 Qualifies for Team USA in the Javelin

DES MOINES, Iowa – Former Dartmouth student-athlete Sean Furey ’04 finished third in the javelin Sunday at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Furey could travel to the Russian capital for this summer’s IAAF World Championships as part of the contingent making up Team USA following his performance at Drake Stadium if he cann reach the event's standard mark in the coming weeks.

The former Big Green competitor claimed third place in the event on Sunday by earning the advantage in a tie-breaker over Barry Krames in posting a better second-best mark. Both had throws of 253-10.0/77.36m, but Furey’s next-best measured toss was more than 10-feet better than that of Krames.

For Furey, reaching the standard could mean this would be the second summer of competing on the world stage after making the US Olympic Team in London last August.

Earlier in the weekend, another former Dartmouth student-athlete lined up for a shot at moving on to Moscow. Ben True ’08 finished fourth in the men’s 10,000m in 29:07.26 on Thursday evening.

True could still make the team if one of the runners who finished ahead of him would need to withdraw in favor of competing in another event.
