Women's Basketball Drops Ivy Contest at Yale 86-52

NEW HAVEN, CONN.  – The Dartmouth women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss at the hands of Yale, 86-52, on Friday evening at Lee Amphitheater.

Freshman Fanni Szabo led the Big Green with 21 points on 7-of-16 from the floor with four three-pointers.  Szabo also picked up a team-high five steals. Senior Nicola Zimmer finished with nine points and sophomore Lakin Roland nearly completed a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Big Green led for a mere 47 seconds to begin the contest, before Yale went on a 17-5 run to take a 10-point lead with 11:13 on a layup by Emmy Allen. Dartmouth (3-16, 0-5 Ivy) ended the run with back-to-back layups by sophomore Kaitana Martinez and Zimmer, cutting the deficit to six, 17-11, with 10:06 remaining. Two minutes later, Szabo hit a three to lower the Yale lead to eight with 7:57 left. The Bulldogs finished the half holding a comfortable double-digit lead, 38-22.

In the second, Yale (10-9, 4-1 Ivy) continued its offensive outburst and increased the margin to 20 on a layup by Sarah Halejian with 11:26 left. The Big Green were held to just 10 points in the final 7:40 of regulation, as the Bulldogs finished the contest scoring 21 of the last 31 points.

Halejian led the Bulldogs with 16 points and Nyasha Sarju and Meghan McIntyre each added 10 points off the bench, respectively. Yale had all but one player score in the contest, as the bench contributed 42 of the 86 points.

Freshman Katie Vareika nailed a pair of late treys to add six points for the Green and White off the bench. Junior Abbey Schmitt finished second on the team contributing five rebounds and a steal.

Dartmouth finished 32 percent from the field and 7-of-9 from the outside. Yale shot in the 50 percent range from both the field and outside, connecting on 30-of-56 from the floor with eight triples. The Bulldogs outrebounded Dartmouth by a small margin (36-32), as Roland led the Big Green with eight and Alex Osborn-Jones and Emmy Allen aided Yale with six each.

Dartmouth will conclude its six-game road swing when they meet Brown tomorrow evening at 6 pm. The game can be heard locally on WTSL 94.3-FM/1400-AM and WTSV 1230-AM. Brett Franklin will call the game alongside Nick Guerriero with the pre-game show beginning at 5:45 pm.
