HANOVER, N.H. - Columbia used a triple to cut the Big Green lead to four points with 3:25 left, but the Dartmouth women's basketball team scored the last five points to earn a 62-52 win over Columbia on Saturday (Feb. 9). The win gives Dartmouth its fourth consecutive win and its fourth straight over the Lions.
Columbia (2-17, 0-5 Ivy) hung around most of the game and made a late push in the final 3:25 of action. A pair of free throws from Brittany Simmons and a triple from Miwa Tachibana cut Dartmouth's 17-point lead to four, but that was as close as the Lions would get as the Big Green held Columbia without a field goal in the final 2:38 en route to the victory.
Dartmouth (6-13, 4-1 Ivy League) had three players in double figures and was led by Abbey Schmitt's (Winnetka, Ill.) second career double-double. The sophomore had a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. Faziah Steen (Detroit, Mich.) and Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) were also in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.
Dartmouth set the tone out of the halftime break as Schmitt scored on the Big Green's first possession of the half and never looked back. Schmitt, who scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, led the charge for the Big Green. The Big Green's shooting was very impressive throughout as they shot a season-best 63.6 (14-of-20) percent in the first half and finished the game at 52.2 (24-of-46) for their third straight game of shooting 40 percent of better.
Columbia used timely three-pointers in the second half to get the lead down to nine points at the halfway mark, but in typical Dartmouth fashion, Lakin Roland (Jeffersonville, Ind.) scored on the next possession to keep the momentum with the Big Green.
The opening minutes of the game looked more like a track meet than a basketball game with both teams getting out in the open court and utilizing their transition games. The Big Green struck first and opened up an 8-2 lead early behind four fast break buckets.
Dartmouth pushed its lead to 15-4 behind three straight baskets, including a triple from Steen that forced Columbia to call a timeout. The Lions scored five unanswered out of the break to cut the Big Green lead to six points at the 12:20 mark.
The Lions were energized by their play on the defensive end, which lead to back-to-back triples from leading scorer Taylor Simpson, but the Big Green wouldn't be deterred, and a trey from Kaitana Martinez (Hailey, Idaho) followed by a layup from Dawson ignited an 8-0 Dartmouth run which pushed the Dartmouth lead to 28-18.
A layup from Courtney Bradford ended a six-minute scoring drought for the Lions, but the Big Green took a 33-20 lead into the halftime break.
Dartmouth is next in action on Friday, Feb. 15 when they travel to Princeton, to take on the Tigers. The Big Green will also take on Penn during the road swing. Both games will start at 7 p.m.
