MILWAUKEE, Wis.- The Dartmouth women's basketball team got as close as 14 in the second half, but three consecutive triples from the Golden Eagles stopped any momentum and sent the Big Green to a 70-52 loss at Marquette on Thursday (Dec. 20).
Despite trailing at the halftime break, the Big Green put together a solid second half, really putting the defensive pressure on in the opening minutes of the half. Baskets from Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Steen cut the Marquette lead to 29-18 with just four minutes off the game clock.
The game was a tale of two halves for the Big Green as they shot just 21.4 percent (6-of-28) in the first half while regrouping and shooting 42.9 percent (12-of-28) in the second half. Marquette (6-5) won the battle of the boards, grabbing 52 rebounds to just 25 for the Big Green.
Marquette was able to pull away midway through the half with three consecutive triples from Arlesia Morse, which put them ahead 54-32 with 8:43 remaining. Dartmouth (1-9) wouldn't go quietly and with baskets from Dawson and Steen were able to get as close as 14 points, but the Golden Eagles sealed the win with free throws down the stretch.
Both teams struggled in the opening minutes, but Dartmouth was able to settle in and with a pair from the charity stripe from Schmitt kept the game at one possession early.
Despite the early score, Marquette jumped out to a 17-point lead, 23-6, at the 7:31 mark sparked by a 17-4 run which featured six points from leading scorer Katherine Plouffe. The Golden Eagle run kept the Big Green scoreless for nearly seven minutes before a layup from Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) ended the drought.
Dartmouth began to take some momentum back over the course of the final four minutes of the first half. Following the final media timeout of the half, Dartmouth clamped down on defense and kept the Golden Eagles without a field goal in the final four minutes.
Freshman Lauren Taiclet (Wellesley, Mass.), who made her collegiate debut in the contest, contributed to the defensive efforts and also added a bucket as Dartmouth closed with a 5-2 burst to cut the halftime lead to 29-15.
