Getting to Know ... No. 1 Sofia Roman
This fall DartmouthSports.com will be running a "Get to Know You Feature" with the freshman members of the Dartmouth women's basketball team. This week's question and answer session is with guard Sofia Roman from White Plains, N.Y.
Roman joins the Big Green after a stellar prep career at White Plains High School. Roman was a team co-captain as a senior and led her team to the league championship during her senior campaign. A two-time all-league selection, Roman led her team in scoring for three consecutive seasons and was a ESPNU Hoopgurlz Top 100 Watch list player and three-star guard prospect.
Roman: I chose Dartmouth because it was the school that fulfilled my long-time goal of playing basketball at an Ivy League School. I love the coaching staff because I know they will help me get better. Dartmouth had been recruiting me for a while and the coaches have always shown a genuine interest and concern for my future and me. Besides basketball, I fell in love with the idea of a close community. Hanover just seemed like the perfect place. Although I'm used to living close to a big city, Dartmouth College is a beautiful, serene place and has a great ambiance to develop individuality. As soon as I stepped on the Green, I felt at peace. I just knew this was the place to be.
Who is the funniest member of the freshman class?
Roman: Gosh, I think it's too early to know whom maybe is the funniest but I do know that every freshman on the team "got jokes" so far.
What are you thinking about majoring here at Dartmouth?
Roman: I'm looking into Pre-Med and Economics, but I'm leaning towards the Economics and Business field.
How do you see yourself helping the team this season?
Roman: I see myself as a playmaker for the team. I will do my best with my skill set to get my teammates the ball, make them feel comfortable with the ball, and create opportunities for better shots for my teammates and myself.
What's one song that gets you pumped up before a game?
Roman: Android Porn by Danza Kuduro.
What is one team that you are looking forward to playing against this season?
Roman: I am looking forward to playing a lot of teams, especially our non-league games. But if I had to choose "the" team to play, it would be Princeton.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Roman: A younger and more feminine version of Jeremy Lin. Haha!!
Who do you model your game after?
Roman: I model my game after my deceased teammate, Tayshana Murphy. I had the opportunity to play with her at the Gauchos for two years. I had the chance to listen to her stories about her life. Although she didn't have much, she had heart whenever she played. She never backed down from a challenge and played with a certain spark. She played with a true passion for the game of basketball. Basketball opened a lot of doors for her, as it did for me. Every time I play, I remember her and the way she played. From her, I remember to seize every opportunity given to me, on and off the court, and to never back down from a challenge. I remind myself to never over think things on the court, and just to play with passion, just like Tayshana did.
