Getting to Know ... No. 13 Lakin Roland
This fall DartmouthSports.com will be running a "Get to Know You Feature" with the freshman members of the Dartmouth women's basketball team. This week's question and answer session is with forward Lakin Roland from Jeffersonville, Ind.
Roland was a four-year letterwinner at Jeffersonville High School where she was a two-time captain. She led her squad to the 2010-11 state championship with a 28-2 record while earning IBCA All-State honors. She was also an Academic All-State selection and AP honorable mention as a senior.
When you first visited Dartmouth what were some of the things that impressed
you about the team and the college?
Roland: The thing that impressed me about the team was how welcoming they were and how they included me in whatever they were doing. Milica (Toskovic) joined me at almost every meal and I remember playing Banannagrams with Eve. The thing that impressed me about the college was how close knit the community was and the beauty during my visit in the fall.
Who do you consider your biggest inspiration and why?
Roland: My biggest inspiration is definitely my Mom because she has taught me everything about life and doing what you need to in order to be successful. Even more than that she is a single mom and has done a pretty good job of raising me :) She has always told me that I can do whatever I dream of in life as long as I work hard.
What are some areas of your game that you would like to improve on throughout
your college career?
Roland: I've never been much of a scorer, always pass first shoot second. So if I had to pick something to improve upon it would be to be able to score on command, and probably ball handling, you can never do enough ball handling.
What is one team that you would like to see Dartmouth play during your four
Roland: I would love to play anyone near or around my hometown and also Western Kentucky University because one of my high school teammates plays there.
Aside from basketball what is another one of your favorite sports?
Roland: I don't like watching women's basketball, only men's. Other than that I would say football or my newfound love at Dartmouth, ice hockey (To me, it's like football on ice which is AWESOME)
What is your favorite movie?
Roland: I am a sappy love movie girl so my favorite movie is "A walk to Remember" but a close second would be the "Transformers" series.
DartmouthSports.com: What are you going miss most
about Jeffersonville, Ind.?
Roland: I'm not going to really miss the location but the people in it. Mostly my family and friends back home. Oh and of course my dogs Bella, and Max
