Big Green Drops Ivy Contest at Princeton, 76-53

PRINCETON, N.J. – Three players finished in double figures and the Big Green went into the half trailing by three, but Princeton overpowered Dartmouth en route to a 76-53 victory on Saturday evening at Jadwin Gym.

Sophomore Lakin Roland led the Big Green with 12 points and five rebounds. Senior Nicola Zimmer added 11 points and was perfect from the line, connecting on all four attempts. Freshman Katie Vareika scored eight of her ten points in the second half off the bench with two from the outside and four from the charity stripe.

Princeton shot 72 percent from the floor in the final stanza after Dartmouth trailed 32-29 at the break. Michelle Miller led all scorers with 16 points and Alex Wheatley had 11. The Tigers owned the glass, out rebounding the Green 44-21. Princeton scored 46 of its 76 points in the paint and got 26 points from the bench.

In the second half, Princeton increased its double-digit lead, 64-44, on a three by Blake Dietrick with 14:14 left. The Tigers took a 20-point lead on Vanessa Smith’s jumper with 5:14 left.

Although they led at the half, Princeton struggled to control the ball as they turned it over 11 times allowing Dartmouth to score nine points in the first. Toskovic scored the first basket of the game, as the visitors held a small advantage until a Michelle Miller layup with 15:21 gave the Tigers an 8-7 lead.

Princeton took its largest lead of the half with 8:24 left on a layup by Mariah Smith. Dartmouth battled back and scored the next eight points led by a pair of triples by Vareika and a jumper by Zimmer. The Big Green trailed the remainder of the half, but kept the deficit within two possessions and had a chance to tie the game after a pair of made free throws made it 28-27.

Dartmouth shot 34 percent from the floor with three treys, but the Tigers shot 48 percent and added 22 points in the paint with Miller contributing seven points. Vareika led the Green with eight off the bench in eight minutes.

Dartmouth will conclude its six-game road trip next weekend when they meet Yale on Friday at 7 pm and Brown on Saturday at 6 pm.
