HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Kamala Thompson and freshman Fanni Szabo scored 10 points each, but the Dartmouth women's basketball team dropped a 54-37 decision to New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Leede Arena.
New Hampshire finished with three players in double figures, led by Elizabeth Belanger with 11 points. Kylee Kilpatrick added a double-double for her squad, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Corinne Coia netted 10 points off the bench, with eight coming in the opening half.
Dartmouth shot 24 percent from the field in the contest, but New Hampshire bested them at 38 percent. The Wildcats outrebounded the Big Green, 45-37, but Dartmouth grabbed 12 offensive rebounds.
Junior Abbey Schmitt led the Green on the glass with nine rebounds, while Thompson finished second with eight. Junior Kaitana Martinez led the squad with three assists, but also managed to add five points and four rebounds.
UNH opened up the contest on a 12-0 run, as the Big Green missed their first 15 shots of the contest. Trailing by 18 with 8:20 remaining in the half, the Big Green went on an 8-0 run to bring the deficit back to 24-14 with 4:15 left, off an offensive put back by Schmitt. UNH added three points to finish the period with a 13-point advantage, 27-14.
The Big Green shot just 16 percent after 20 minutes, compared to the 42 percent by New Hampshire. Schmitt led the team with four points at the break and pulled down seven rebounds. Coia led the Wildcats with eight points off the bench.
In the second half, Dartmouth cut the deficit to single digits on a pair of free throws by Szabo, but UNH regained a 14-point advantage midway through. The Big Green had another opportunity to lower the deficit using a mini 4-0 run on baskets by Martinez and Thompson, but the 10-point margin was too much to battle back from. New Hampshire erased the run by scoring nine of the next 11 points and took a 17-point cushion at the final buzzer.
Dartmouth will host Bryant on Tuesday evening at 7 pm before heading to Chicago for two games.
