HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball went 2-0 on day two of its home tournament, defeating Iona, 3-1 (25-18, 16-25, 25-16, 25-22) to start the day before wrapping up the weekend with a huge 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart (17-25, 25-22, 10-25, 25-21, 16-14). The Big Green are now 3-3 through two of their three tournaments.

Sophomore Tori Dozier had a great day, ending both matches with a double-double (33 assists, 14 digs against Iona and 33 assists, 11 digs versus Sacred Heart). Classmate Abby Kott had nine kills in the first match and led with 15 in the second, while freshman Tola Akinwumi made her first appearance of the season in the match against the Pioneers and came up huge with six block assists. At the conclusion of the invite, Dozier and Kott were named All-Tournament.

“That was a great way to close the tournament,” head coach Gilad Doron said after the Sacred Heart match. “Once again, we proved we have to have everyone ready to contribute and play. We saw a lot of good things from so many players and also saw how our young players grew in front of our eyes. Coming back from a 13-11 deficit in the fourth game was huge, not only for our confidence but for proof that we’re starting something new here.

“Abby was dominant on the net today,” Doron continued. “She, Tori, Mallen and Tola all did great blocking and had some good plays. Hopefully, we stay hungry and humble for what’s next.”

Dartmouth vs. Iona
Although the start of the first set was close, the Big Green started to pull away halfway through. With a 13-10 lead, Dartmouth won six of the next 10 points to leave Iona trailing by five (19-14). The Green went on a five-point run from a pair of Gael errors and kills by sophomore Carly Tower, Dozier and freshman Mallen Bischoff (24-15). Although Iona held Dartmouth there while it got four points closer,  an error on the other side of the net ended the set (25-18).

An eight-point Iona run in the early stages of the second set gave the Gaels a lead that they would never relinquish (13-4). The Big Green worked their way back to get within six (20-14), but Iona got its first and only win of the day by taking five of the next seven points (25-16).

Dartmouth capitalized on its opponent’s errors at the start of the third to jump out to an 8-3 lead. With the Gaels trailing by four (16-12) – the closest they got all set – the Big Green went on a 9-4 run thanks to kills by freshmen Elise Petit (3), Olympia Nagel-Caland (1), Tower (1) and Dozier (1) and three errors to take a 2-1 lead (25-16).

With seven ties, the fourth set could have gone either way. Three consecutive points put Iona ahead, 20-16, but Dartmouth won the set and the match by going on an 8-2 run. Trailing by four, the Big Green put themselves up by two following six consecutive Gael errors (22-20), but the visitors soon tied the score following two points of their own (22-22). An Iona error and two Dozier kills gave the win to the home team (25-22).

Dartmouth vs. Sacred Heart
The Pioneers took control of the first set following six straight points early on (9-3). The Big Green dominated the middle part of the set and managed to pull within two (16-14) following kills by Kott, Tower and Bischoff and a pair of Sacred Heart errors, but a 7-0 Pioneer run all but shut the set down (23-14). Dartmouth got three points closer, but could not catch up completely (25-17).

Sacred Heart had a slight edge to start the second set, but things got a lot closer soon after. Tied at 14-all, there were five more ties before the score was tied at 19-19. The Big Green scored four in a row thanks to a Kott kill and a trio of Pioneer errors to make it 23-19 and, although the visitors got two points closer, another error and a kill by Tower made it 1-1 (25-22).

The Pioneers came out very strongly in the third set, going on multiple runs to end the set swiftly (25-10).

Dartmouth turned things around in the fourth set, scoring 10 of the first 14 points to get off to an early lead. With a comfortable 18-12 edge, Sacred Heart made things a little more difficult by scoring five in a row to make it an 18-17 set. From there, the teams traded points and the Big Green would pull away by a point or two, only to have the Pioneers close the gap right up. Two errors gave Dartmouth a 24-20 advantage and, following a Sacred Heart point, one more error sent the match to a fifth set (25-21).

Trailing, 4-1, in the fifth, kills by Kott and senior Sara Lindquist and a Pioneer error made it 5-4 in Dartmouth’s favor. The teams went back and forth until the Big Green had a very slightly 9-8 edge, but the Pioneers went on to score five straight to make it 13-9. Dartmouth came back from that to score five consecutive points off two errors, two Bischoff kills and an ace by classmate Lauren Douglas to pull ahead (14-13). Sacred Heart tied things up, but another Pioneer error and a final kill by Bischoff gave the win to Dartmouth (16-14).

The Big Green will close tournament play next weekend at the Holly Young Invitational, taking on Rhode Island, Siena and host UNH.
