The Dartmouth women’s volleyball team opens the 2013 season this weekend, traveling to the Empire State for three non-conference games in the Volley in the Valley Tournament.

The Big Green start the season at a road tournament for the fourth straight year. The Green and White face host Marist on Friday before taking on America East foes UMass Lowell and Hartford on Saturday.

Big Green Tidbits

Rank and File – For the first time in program history, Dartmouth’s incoming class received national recognition. The eight freshmen were ranked in the top 100 by PrepVolleyball.com. The premier prep-site listed the Big Green as one of 44 institutions from across the nation to receive a spot on the “High Honorable Mention” list.

Leadership From Upperclassmen – Senior middle blocker Elisa Scudder and junior opposite hitter Lucia Pohlman are the captains for the 2013 squad. Last season, Scudder topped 150 kills for the third straight season. The Asburn, Va., native was second the team with 161 kills and she led the Big Green with 64 blocks. Pohlman appeared in 81 of 84 sets for Dartmouth in 2012. The Mill Valley, Calif., native registered 42 assists and team-best 25 aces.

Super Sophomores – During their second year on campus, sophomores Kayden Cook and Paige Caridi look to make major contributions for head coach Erin Lindsey’s team. Cook led the Green and White with 563 assists, ranked third with 174 digs and had 13 service aces. Cook registered 25 more assists in 10 games last season. Caridi was the only member of the team to appear in all 84 sets. Led the team with 261 digs and ranked second on the team with 184 kills.

Killer Power – As a team last year the Big Green had 842 kills. Dartmouth averaged 10.0 kills per set and Alex Schoenberger led the team with 224, netting more then 200 for the second straight season.

New Faces – Lindsey added Dee Smith to the coaching staff in the off-season as she joins Jose Lugo on the sidelines. The eight freshmen also look to make an impact during their first year with the Big Green.

Series History – Dartmouth owns a winning record against each of the three opponents it faces this weekend. The Big Green have topped Marist two straight times, the most recent coming in a neutral site contest in Sept. of 2011. Dartmouth won its only meeting with UMass Lowell in 1995 and the Green have won four straight against Hartford dating back to 2006.

Scouting the Red Foxes – Marist returns to Poughkeepsie for its 2013 home opener. After winning the first game of the season against Toledo at the Toledo Volleyball Invite, the Red Foxes have lost three straight. During the three-match skid, Marist has won only one game.  Grace Hill leads the team with 45 kills. Brooke Zywick has a team-best 77 digs and Audra Brady has 143 assists.

Scouting the Riverhawks – UMass Lowell hits the road for the first time this weekend in its inaugural season at the Division I level. The Riverhawks are still in search of their first win of 2013 after dropping back-to-back matches against Manhattan and Sacred Heart.  Anisa Smith leads the team with 18 kills. Carolyn Eddy has a team-high 31 digs and Kamiren Humphrey has 28 assists.

Scouting the Hawks – Hartford ends an eight-match road trip to begin this season at the Volley in the Valley Tournament. The Hawks have had a challenging schedule early, dropping matches to NC State and UConn. Dionna Kirton leads the team with 44 kills and eight service aces. Jackie Tamburri has a team-best 165 assists and Paola Llerandi has 60 digs.
