NEW YORK, N.Y. — For the third consecutive match, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team went five sets, this time losing, 3-2 (17-25, 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 10-15), at Columbia on Saturday. The Big Green are 1-2 in those matches and now are 14-9 overall and 6-6 in the Ivy League. The Lions improved to 15-7 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
Dartmouth held a 2-1 lead in the match, but Columbia won the final two sets to close out the contest. In the fifth, the Lions jumped out to a 10-4 lead. The Big Green slowed down Columbia, winning six of the last 11 points, but the Lions took the set, 15-10.
Senior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led the Big Green with 18 kills and added 13 digs. Baird was one of three Dartmouth players with 10-plus kills. Freshman Lucia Pohlman (Mill Valley, Calif.) recorded 14 kills and freshman Alex Schoenberger (Corte Madera, Calif.) totaled 11 kills. Senior Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) had a double-double with 50 assists and 17 digs, and senior Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Va.) led the team with 22 digs.
The Lions used a balanced attack with only one player recording more than 10 kills. Megan Gaughn led the team with 11 kills and 10 digs. Columbia had seven players tally five or more kills. Cindy Chen had a team-high 20 digs and Colleen Brennan totaled 49 assists.
In the first, the Lions hit .367 compared to just .054 for Dartmouth. Columbia won the opening set, 25-17. In the second, the Big Green cruised to a 25-15 victory. Dartmouth carried the momentum over to the third set and won, 25-20. The Lions responded by winning the fourth, 25-21, to push the match to a fifth and final set.
For the match, Dartmouth hit .167 and Columbia hit .200. The Big Green totaled nine service aces and nine block assists. The Lions recorded five service aces, one block solo and 14 block assists.
Dartmouth returns home for its final two contests of the season next weekend, Nov. 11-12, when it hosts Brown and Yale. It will be senior night on Saturday against Yale.
