Northeast Credit Union Athlete of the Week - Zupan & D'Agostino
The Big Green influence expands to cover the League and Nation this week with Abbey D'Agostino capturing National titles and Nejc Zupan earning Ivy League titles. D'Agostino became the first American woman to capture the National title in the 5000m and 3000m at the same meet. Zupan earned the first ever Swimmer of the Meet honor for a Dartmouth athlete at the Ivy Championship.
For their efforts Zupan and D'Agostino have been named the Northeast Credit Union Athlets of the Week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding
student-athletes - one male, one female - as the Northeast Credit Union
Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their
efforts both on and off the field of competition.
D'Agostino became the first American woman ever to win both the 5000m and 3000m at an NCAA Championship, completing the distance double this weekend in Fayetteville. The two individual national titles were the second and third of her career after also winning the 5000m last spring at the outdoor meet. No American woman had ever won the 5000m and the 3000m in a single career, let alone on consecutive days in one championship meet prior to D'Agostino accomplishing the feat this weekend. She won the 5000 Friday night in a Dartmouth record, before taking the 3000 on Saturday, winning both races with relative ease over some of the most talented distance runners in the nation. After completing the sweep, D'Agostino is now an eight-time First Team All-American across three seasons of competition and at six straight NCAA Championship meets.
Junior Nejc Zupan (Kamnik, Slovenia) had the best Ivy League Championship meet for any Dartmouth swimmer in program history over the weekend. He took home Ivy League titles in the 200 and 400 IM as well as the 200 breastroke, setting Ivy League meet records in each event. Zupan, who was the reigning 400 IM champion, also swam on the 200 and 400 medley relays that set Dartmouth standards. With his three titles, he became the first Dartmouth swimmer - male or female - to earn Swimmer of the Meet honors. Additionally, the Slovenian native, set Dartmouth varsity records in the 200 and 400 IM. Zupan will represent Dartmouth at the NCAA Championships at the end of the month.
