Women's Tennis Announces Team Awards and 2013-14 Captain

HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women’s tennis team and head coach Bob Dallis recently announced its 2012-13 team awards and the captain for the 2013-14 campaign.

The new captain for the Big Green is soon-to-be senior Melissa Matsuoka. For the team awards, freshman Katherine Yau was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, freshman Sarah Bessen was tabbed the squads Most Improved Player and senior tri-captain Jeri Reichel received the Class of 1985 Spirit Award.

Yau impressed during her first year on campus earning second team All-Ivy singles honors after going 4-3 in conference action, while competing at the No. 1 position for six of those seven matches. Yau notched three straight wins in league action down the stretch, topping two unanimous first team All-Ivy honorees. The Manhasset, N.Y., native won 18 singles matches, including a team-best six match winning streak in the middle of the season.

Bessen picked up 24 wins in 2012-13. 12 in singles action and 12 in doubles play. In doubles action, she picked up a conference win against then-No. 68 Princeton.  Her singles play was highlighted by a win in her first career Ivy League match against Cornell. During the middle of the season Bessen settled in and ran off a five match winning streak from February to the middle of March.

As a tri-captain, Reichel earned the spirit award for leading the Big Green on and off the court. During her senior slate the Hilton Head, S.C., native competed in eight doubles matches while picking up a win in league action against Princeton.

Matsuoka prepares for her leadership role next season after going 11-7 in singles and 7-9 in doubles as a junior. In singles, she won a trio of conference matches against Cornell, Princeton and Brown. In doubles, Matsuoka netted a conference win in Hanover versus the Tigers.
