NEW HAVEN, CONN. — The 53rd-ranked Dartmouth women's tennis team lost to Columbia, 4-2, in the fifth-place match at the ECAC Indoor Championships at New Haven on Sunday. The loss dropped the Big Green to 3-5, while the Lions improved to 5-1.
Dartmouth took the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Freshmen Akiko Okuda (Tenafly, N.J.) and Theresa Smith (University Park, Fla.) won at the top spot, 8-3, and junior Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and sophomore Sabrina Stewart (London, England) earned a victory at the third spot, 8-3.
In singles, Dartmouth played without freshman Janet Liu, who was sidelined by the same illness that kept junior co-captain Sarah Leonard off the court for the Big Green's previous two matches. Okuda won at the second spot, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7), and Dartmouth lost two matches in third set superbreakers. Sophomore Rachel Decker-Sadowski (Santa Barbara, Calif.) fell at the fourth spot, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-0), and Reichel lost at sixth singles, 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). Junior Christina Danosi and sophomore Melissa Matsuoka, who both played in the singles line-up on last year's Ivy League Championship team, remain sidelined by injuries.
The Big Green next hosts Akron on Friday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m.
