HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women’s tennis team defeated Cornell, 4-3, on Saturday at the Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion. Junior co-captain Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.), freshman Theresa Smith (University Park, Fla.), and sophomores Sabrina Stewart (London, England) and Rachel Decker-Sadowski (Santa Barbara, Calif.) recorded wins for the Big Green in singles. Dartmouth improved to 7-9 (1-1 Ivy League), while Cornell fell to 8-7 (0-3 Ivy League).

The Big Green dropped the doubles point, getting their lone win from junior Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Smith at No. 3. But Dartmouth quickly went to work in singles, as Decker-Sadowski put the first point on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6.

Shortly afterward Stewart notched another Dartmouth win, losing just four games at No. 5. At No. 2 and No. 3, freshman Akiko Okuda (Tenafly, N.J.) fell in three sets to Christine Ordway, who played No. 1 for the Big Red the past two years, while classmate Janet Liu (Palo Alto, Calif.) lost in straight sets to Ryann Young, who is 12-2 in dual matches.

With Cornell leading 3-2, Leonard and Smith then won within a minute of each other. Leonard downed fellow former USTA/New England player Sarah O’Neil 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1, while Smith defeated fellow former USTA/Eastern player Gabby Sullivan 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4.

Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday, April 14, when it plays at Princeton at 12 p.m.
