Highest ranking: No. 78 on Tennis Recruiting

Tan has been ranked in the top 30 in the USTA/Southern California in singles and has won a USTA sportsmanship award. She was a two-time Moore League singles and doubles champion for Lakewood High, and was named the Long Beach Press-Telegram's Player of the Year in 2010. Tan's older brother Sean played tennis for Notre Dame and graduated in 2011, and her sister Stacey plays tennis for Stanford, where she is a junior. Tan is coached by Robert Lansdorp, who has coached numerous top players including pros Lindsay Davenport, Pete Sampras, and Maria Sharapova.
