Baseball Subdued by No. 27 TCU, 5-1
FORT WORTH, Texas — Preston Morrison scattered eight hits over eight innings while striking out eight to lead the 27th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs to a 5-1 over visiting Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. Boomer White stroked a pair of RBI doubles for TCU (11-7), while senior Jeff Keller drove in the lone run for the Big Green (1-4) with an eighth-inning double.
Entering the game with a 1.67 ERA, Morrison (2-2) managed to lower it even further by yielding just one run over his eight innings of work. The right-hander threw 101 pitches on the afternoon, 74 for strikes, as he kept the Dartmouth bats at bay. He retired 11 straight batters over one stretch, and helped his own cause by picking off two runners, including the only batter he walked. Morrison did not allow the run until two were out in the eighth when junior Thomas Roulis singled and raced around the bases on Keller’s two-bagger.
Dartmouth sophomore right-hander Michael Danielak (0-1) struggled with his control in the first inning, walking three of the first four batters, but did pick a runner off second to nearly escape the jam. But with two out, White split the gap in right-center for a double to bring home a run. The runner on first also tried to score, but he was gunned down on the relay from Keller in right.
The Horned Frogs scored solitary runs in the second, third and fourth innings against Danielak as well. Garrett Crain tripled and scored in the second, White doubled home Kevin Cron in the third, and Cody Jones tripled with one out in the fourth to score Kyle Bacak who had drawn a leadoff walk. When Dylan Fitzgerald lofted a fly ball to right, Keller picked up his second assist by nailing Jones at the plate.
Freshman Mike Concato relieved Danielak pitched a scoreless sixth before yielding the final TCU run of the game in the seventh. Keaton Jones began the inning with a base hit and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Concato caught Fitzgerald looking at strike three for the second out, but Cron pushed a ball through the right side for an RBI single.
Junior Nick Lombardi was the only Big Green hitter to collect two knocks, while Parisi extended his streak of reaching base safely to 20 games dating back to last year with a bunt single to start the game.
White, Crain and Keaton Jones each had two hits for the Horned Frogs
Danielak allowed four runs on six hits, four walks and a hit batter with one strikeout in his five innings of work in suffering the defeat. After Concato’s two stanzas, freshman Zach Sorenson made his collegiate debut with a scoreless eighth.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. (EST) in a game that will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest Plus. Sophomore right-hander Beau Sulser (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is slated to toe the slab against Horned Frog lefty Tyler Alexander (2-1, 2.11).
