BOSTON - On a surprisingly warm Saturday in early October, the Dartmouth women's cross country team ran to an eighth-place showing at the New England Championships held at Franklin Park. Senior Elizabeth Short (North Reading, Mass.) and junior Katie Sullivan (Carmel, N.Y.) were 20th and 22nd overall, respectively, to lead the Big Green on the 5K course to 177 team points.
Short led the way with an 18:26 finish, while Sullivan was just a second back in 18:27.
Saturday's varsity race featured 39 teams from across the region competing for the title.
Sophomore Arianna Vailas (Manchester, N.H.) was the third Dartmouth runner to finish on this day, crossing in 32nd in a time of 18:39. Fellow sophomore Bridget End (Summit, N.J.) followed closely behind in 18:45 to earn a 39th-place finish.
Junior Kaitlyn D'Orazio (York, Maine) was the fifth and final Big Green harrier to cross the line at Franklin Park in the scoring, as she was 64th overall in 19:05.
Seniors Laura Hempel (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Christina Supino (Windham, N.H.) were sixth and seventh, respectively, for Dartmouth. Hempel finished 71st overall (19:09), while Supino was 115th (19:48) in the field of nearly 300 runners.
In the first race of the day, the Dartmouth junior varsity team claimed first place with 59 team points. Sophomore Lindsay Walsh (Swampscott, Mass.) led the way in fifth place (19:04), while Freshmen Alison Lanios (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Sarah Delozier (Nashville, Tenn.) each ran a 19:09 to place eighth and ninth, respectively.
Dartmouth will head to the NCAA Pre-Championship meet next weekend in Terre Haute, Ind., on Sunday, Oct. 16.
