Akanno comes to Hanover after a one-year stint at Fairleigh Dickinson, where he was an assistant coach and worked with jumps, hurdles and sprinters. In addition to his duties with the track program, he worked as a sports performance specialist for The Annex Sports Performance. He developed strength and conditioning programs and did speed and agility workout plans.
Prior to his work at Fairleigh Dickinson, he was an undergraduate assistant coach and intern at the University of Connecticut. Akanno organized practice schedules and training programs for different groups, while coordinating recruiting for sprints, hurdles and jumps. He also implemented Dartfish Software into the program with daily video and computer analysis sessions. Other duties included, budget preparations, travel and meals. While at UConn, Akanno was part of the Big East Conference Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009 after winning the Indoor Championship.
Akanno, a 2009 graduate of Connecticut, competed in the heptathlon, long jump, triple jump and hurdles for the Huskies. He was the team captain of the 2008 squad that took home the Big East Championship and was a member for 2006 Big East Champions as well.
Akanno has also been a volunteer coach at the high school level at Seton Hall Prep and Piscataway High School. He was the jumps coach at Seton Hall, which he attended from 2000-04, and tutored jumpers and hurdlers at Piscataway.
