2013 FIL Women's World Cup: Dartmouth Update
OSHAWA, Ontario – Two of the best teams currently at the 2013 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup are being led defensively by a pair of former Dartmouth goalkeepers.
Devon Wills ’06 and Julia Szafman ’13 are leading the contingents from the USA and Israel, respectively, to undefeated records through Monday, July 15, with one game left in Pool Play in the city of Oshawa less than an hour north of Toronto.
Wills stopped five shots in a win over England (17-7) and has been the Americans’ starter in all three contests, including earning victories against Wales (19-2) and Australia (18-9).
Szafman, who just completed her final season in Hanover, also has Team Israel boasting a 3-0 mark after wins over Germany (15-6), Scotland (13-6), South Korea (19-2) and most recently Hong Kong (19-4).
In the opener against Germany, Szafman turned aside seven shots in playing the full 60 minutes. She would post six saves against Scotland and two against South Korea and four against Hong Kong as Israel joined the US, Canada and Japan as the only remaining undefeated teams left in the tournament.
Both Wills and Szafman will lead their teams into the playoffs of the tournament as each clinched a berth beyond Pool Play. Israel still has one crossover game with Japan (July 16) before playoffs begin on July 17, while the US will take on the hosts from Canada on July 16 prior to the quarterfinals.
